최영님 교수의 연구실은 치주염, 습관성 건조증, 구강 림프구성 염증성 질환 등 구강 및 면역 관련 질환의 병태생리학을 밝히는 데 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 특히 면역세포, 특히 T세포와 B세포의 활성화가 뼈 파괴와 염증 반응에 미치는 영향을 분자생물학적·세포배양 기반으로 규명하고 있으며, 구강 및 장내 미생물군과 자가면역질환 간의 연관성도 탐색하고 있습니다. 이와 함께 치주염의 조기 진단 기술 개발과 새로운 치료 전략 모색에도 기여하고 있습니다.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a variant of lichen planus (LP), a common chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disease. Cutaneous lesions of LP are self-limiting, but OLP lesions are non-remissive, alternating periods of exacerbation and quiescence, and only symptomatic treatments exist for OLP. The precise etiology and pathogenesis of OLP are hardly understood, which is a major obstacle to the development of new therapeutics for this disease.
