15Among Korean young adults, stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension, compared with normal blood pressure, were associated with increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease events. Young adults with hypertension, defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA criteria, may be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
The findings of our study indicate that increased cholesterol levels were associated with high CVD risk in young adults. Furthermore, young adults with decreased cholesterol levels had reduced risk for CVD.
The importance of adherence to antihypertensive treatments for the prevention of cardiovascular disease has not been well elucidated. This study evaluated the effect of antihypertensive medication adherence on specific cardiovascular disease mortality (ischemic heart disease [IHD], cerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral infarction). Our study used data from a 3% sample cohort that was randomly extracted from enrollees of Korean National Health Insurance. Study subjects were aged ≥20 years, were diagn
Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17 is a probiotic strain isolated from human breast milk. Animal studies reported that BNR17 inhibited increases in body weight and adipose tissue weights. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antiobesity effects of BNR17 in humans. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 90 volunteers aged 20-75 years with body mass index (BMI) from 25 to 35 kg/m2 were randomized to receive a placebo, low-dose BNR (BNR-L, 109 CFU/day), or
Low or high hemoglobin concentrations were associated with elevated cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Reaching and maintaining hemoglobin concentrations within the normal range correlated with decreased all-cause mortality.
We found possible evidence linking PPI use to an increased risk of fracture, but no association between H(2)RA use and fracture risk. Widespread use of PPIs with the potential risk of fracture is of great importance to public health. Clinicians should carefully consider their decision to prescribe PPIs for patients already having an elevated risk of fracture because of age or other factors.
High FIB-4 is a highly predictive risk factor for HCC incidence among Korean HBsAg carriers. FIB-4 is a promising, easily applicable, and cost-effective clinical tool in identifying a subpopulation of HBsAg carriers who are at heightened risk. Our study needs to be replicated in larger future studies on various ethnic groups; nonetheless, our study suggests that FIB-4 may play a valuable role in HCC screening among HBsAg carriers.
Low AMY1 CNVs correlated with high insulin resistance in asymptomatic Korean men, and such a relationship presented differently according to the status of smoking and alcohol consumption.
White spot syndrome virus (WSSV), an important shrimp pathogen that can affect both salt- and freshwater shrimp, has a high mortality rate that can reach up to 100% in 3-10 days. Therefore, we assessed the susceptibility of Macrobrachium nipponense (De Haan, 1849), a freshwater prawn native to Korea, to artificial WSSV infection. Although rearing in water containing WSSV-infected carcasses did not result in infection, M. nipponense was infected with WSSV after being fed a WSSV-containing diet, p
Health risk appraisal (HRA) is a systematic approach for collecting information regarding individual risk factors, predicting the probability of disease occurrence and death, and linking patients with interventions to promote health and prevent disease. Because the risk factors of cardiovascular disease are well established, several cardiovascular disease risk prediction models have been developed over multiple decades. The health risk appraisal prediction model of the Korean national health scr
Background. The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been increasing in the general population. This study evaluated the association between NAFLD and significant coronary stenosis in asymptomatic adults and evaluated sex-based differences. Methods. We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study in participants without previous cardiovascular diseases who visited the Seoul National University Hospital Health Promotion Center for a health checkup between January 1, 2010,
Our findings revealed a significant positive association between OSA risk, as measured using the STOP-Bang score, and both the likelihood of glaucoma and high IOP.
