15Adult inguinal hernias developed at a relatively younger age in overweight and obese patients than in normal weight patients. There were no specific differences in other clinical characteristics and outcomes between the two groups. Therefore inguinal hernia repair in overweight and obese patients is a safe procedure as in normal weight patients.
Intestinal obstruction is a common surgical emergency. Transmesenteric hernia is an unusual cause of bowel obstruction that may result in irreversible damage of the bowel and a fatal outcome. Once incarceration of the bowel occurs, strangulation and gangrene follow immediately. The mortality rate associated with this condition is about 15%, but in the presence of gangrene of the bowel, the mortality rate is more than 50%. An accurate preoperative diagnosis of a transmesenteric hernia is very dif
Damage control surgery could be an option for airway injury with blood clotting problems due to massive bleeding after securing a patent airway.
Pelvic malunion should be defined according to the population and age. These results could be a reference in assessing the quality of reduction after internal fixation of the patients with traumatic diastasis of the pubic symphysis.
Lumbar hernias are rare posterolateral abdominal wall defects. There are two types of lumbar hernia. One is a superior lumbar hernia through the deep superior orifice (Grynfeltt triangle), and the other is a lower lumbar hernia through the superficial lower orifice (Petit triangle). A lumbar hernia is often misdiagnosed as a lipoma, so a cautious clinical examination is very important. Reports of recurrent lumbar hernia are extremely rare in the literature. We experienced a case of recurrence in
Delayed rupture of post-traumatic pseudoaneurysms of the visceral arteries, especially the pancreaticoduodenal artery, is uncommon. Here, we describe a 55-year-old man hemorrhaging from a pseudoaneurysm of the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA). Computed tomography of the abdomen showed active bleeding in the IPDA and large amounts of hemoperitoneum and hemoretroperitoneum. Selective mesenteric angiography showed that the pseudoaneurysm arose from the IPDA, and treatment by angioemboliza
Cardiac rupture is a rare complication of CPR but is usually fatal when it occurs. Here we report a 59-year-old woman who developed cardiac rupture which was caused by a fracture of the sternum and ribs associated with closed-chest cardiac massage.
We report on a 36-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with a self-inflicted neck stab injury. Initial vital signs were stable. Arterial blood test revealed pH 7.41, pCO 2 38 mmHg, pO 2 71 mmHg, and SaO 2 94%. On physical examination, a 10 cm length transverse laceration with a skin defect in the lower anterior neck was observed. Computed tomography (CT) angiography showed a soft skin defect in the anterior neck at Zone I, subcutaneous emphysema at the anterior neck and chest w
Iliac vein rupture after blunt trauma is extremely rare, but there are some case reports describing endovascular repair of this lesion. However, there is no case report describing insertion of a stent graft in a patient with return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after cardiac arrest. Here we report our experience of performing stent graft insertion on a patient with ROSC with left common iliac vein rupture.
The following key questions and recommendations are presented herein: when is airway intubation initiated in severe trauma? Airway intubation must be initiated in severe trauma patients with a GCS of 8 or lower (1B). Should rapid sequence intubation (RSI) be performed in trauma patients? RSI should be performed in trauma patients to secure the airway unless it is determined that securing the airway will be problematic (1B). What should be used as an induction drug for airway intubation? Ketamine
The internal jugular vein (IJV) very rarely gets ruptured by blunt trauma and is usually surgically repaired. Here, we report a case of successful nonsurgical treatment using external compression in patient with ruptured left IJV with multifocal active bleeding in neck computed tomography.
Purpose: Incarcerated inguinal hernia may have very unusual hernial sac contents. In this study we aim to present clinical characteristics about incarcerated inguinal hernia of the greater omentum. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed hospital records of 643 adult patients who underwent inguinal hernia repair from November 2001 to January 2009. The age, sex, location, type, symptom duration, body mass index (BMI), comorbidity, type of anesthesia, operative time, postoperative hospital stay and c
A 17-year-old man presented to the emergency department (ED) via another hospital after a motorcycle accident. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed 20 minutes before arrival to the ED. CPR was continued after arrival but the patient died without return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Laboratory
The Saemaeul Movement, which is the representative national campaign of Korea aimed at the development of local communities, has drawn a great deal of attention from home and abroad and formed an element of Korea's national brand since 2000. Accordingly, this research was conducted for the purpose of constructing a memorial park in Shindo Village, Cheongdo County, North Kyoungsang Province, which is a home to the Saemaeul Movement. As the Saemaeul Movement is benchmarked by many countries around
