Abstract The trickster is a liminal figure who subverts and undermines existing power structures. But what happens when the trickster is appropriated by a totalitarian regime? Four North Korean collections of tales featuring Kim Sŏndal, a famous trickster from feudal Korea, show how he can be repurposed as a means of ideological education and institutional control.

21세기 들어 한국 사회가 다문화사회가 되어가는 추세다. 이 연구는 최근 영미권에서 다문화주의(multiculturalism)와 세계화(globalization) 등을 다루는 연구를 검토함으로써 한국의 미래지향적인 다문화사회가 무엇인지 그리고 그 사회에서의 구비문학의 역할을 알아보는 데에 목표를 삼았다.\n먼저 구비문학･민속학 연구자와 인접 분야 연구자들이 20세기 말까지 다문화주의의 문제에 대해서 고민한 것을 보았는데 여기서 정체성의 중요성을 알 수가 있었다. 특히 민속의 연행은 어떤 정체성을 공유하는 사람들끼리만 이루어지는 것이 아니라 다른 정체성을 공유하는 사람들끼리도 이루어진다는 지적이 있었다. 그러나 90년대 들어 문화적 정체성을 다루는 다문화주의가 비판의 대상이 되었고 민속학 연구자들 사이에도 그 단어가 금기시되는 듯했다. 이는 미국에서 선포된 문화전쟁(culture war)과도 관련이 없지 않았다. 다문화주의에 대한 비판을 요약하자면 다양성을 존중하는 의도에서 출발했으나

문학번역은 번역가의 목적과 접근방법에 따라서 결과물이 달라진다. 이런 목적과 접근방법에는 두 가지 경향이 있는데 하나는 원문의 언어와 문화적 내용을 중시하는 것이며 다른 하나는 도착어와 문화를 중시하는 것이다. 대부분의 번역은 이 두 가지의 극단 사이에 있다. 본 논문은 이효석의 메밀꽃 필 무렵(1936)과 황순원의 학(1953)에 대한 영문번역 각 6편을 대상으로 하여 한국문학번역에 있어서 어느 쪽으로 기울어지는지를 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 그리고 이러한 경향이 한국문학 번역과 독자층 형성에 어떤 영향을 미치는 지를 살펴본다.12편의 번역에서 다루는 문화적인 용어나 특정한 출발어 표현을 검토한 결과는 다음과 같다. 한편으로는 출발어 단어와 표현을 중시하는 경향이 있었는데 이는 오역이라고 볼 수밖에 없는 직역이나 도착어 독자에게 아무 의미 없는 글자번역(transliteration)을 초래했다는 것을 밝혔다. 다른 한편으로는 매끄러운 도착어 텍스트를 형성하는 과정에서 출발어 단어

원래 ‘땅에 붙어있는 말’이라는 의미를 지니던 버내큘러(vernacular)라는 개념은 미국에서 언어학 분야를 비롯하여 문화 인류학, 건축학, 문학비평, 수사학, 민속종교학, 민속학 등 다양한 분야의 연구에서 많이 언급되어 왔다. 1960년대부터는 문화인류학 분야에서 제도와 대비되는 개념으로 사용되었고 건축학에서도 이와 비슷하게 건축학계나 고급 디자인과 차별되는 요소를 가리키기 위해서 사용되었다. 특히 최근 들어 건축학에서는 ‘버내큘러’란 용어가 아직도 유용한 것인지에 대한 논의가 이루어지고 있는데 버내큘러를 초월할 필요가 있다고 보는 견해도 있고 버내큘러를 재인식할 필요가 있다고 보는 견해도 있다. 어느 쪽이든 버내큘러와 제도가 대립되는 관계에 있으면서도 혼성적인 관계도 있다는 것을 인정하고 있으며 수사학이나 민속학 등의 분야에서도 그 둘의 대립적이면서도 혼성적인 관계를 강조하고 있다.BR 최근에는 디지털 버내큘러도 많이 논의되고 있는데 특히 하워드의 ‘전자 혼성성’과 ‘버내큘러적
