15Over the 42 month period from January 2003 to June 2006, a total of 2,952 canine biopsy specimens were received from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University and from veterinary practitioners across the nation. Out of these, 748 (25.34%) cases were diagnosed as canine cutaneous tumors in the Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University, Korea. Thirty-eight different types of cutaneous tumors were identified and categor
Although the majority of cauda equina tumors are primary tumors, intradural metastasis should be considered before surgery in patients with previously treated RCC.
A variety of metabolic disorders are associated with a decrease in estradiol (E2) during natural or surgical menopause. Postmenopausal women are prone to excessive fat accumulation in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue due to the loss of E2 via abnormalities in lipid metabolism and serum lipid levels. In skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, genes related to energy metabolism and fatty acid oxidation, such as those encoding peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) and e
Paragangliomas are neoplastic proliferations of extra-adrenal paraganglionic cells and belong to the neuroendocrine tumor family. Paraganglion cells embryologically arise from the neural crest ectoderm and are distributed segmentally and symmetrically along the longitudinal axis of the body as minute aggregates. 4 Based on the anatomical distribution, innervation, and microscopic structure, the paraganglion system is divided into 2 main groups: the adrenal medulla and the extra-adrenal paragangl
A 5-year-old male neutered Siamese cat was referred because of nasal swelling, nasal discharge, and oral respiration. Computed tomography and necropsy following euthanasia revealed a firm tan mass in the nasopharynx, occluding the nasal passage. Histologically, the nasopharyngeal mass was composed of solid nests, anastomosing cords, and closely packed glands separated by a delicate fibrovascular stroma. Individual neoplastic cells were cylindrical to polyhedral in shape, had distinct cell border
This study sought to analyze the latent classes of challenging behaviors among persons with developmental disabilities and examine the effects of related variables. To this end, the Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities collected data from the Survey on the Work and Life of Persons with Developmental Disabilities from 3000 households that included at least one family member with a developmental disability aged ≥15 years, surveying the persons themselves as well as their caregiver
Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are tumors that occur in most animals and show strong invasiveness into surrounding tissues and nearby osseous tissues. This report describes a case of SCC in a 5-yr-old female nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) with a hemorrhagic mass on the left mandibular region. The tumor originated in skin tissues and showed invasion of the oral cavity, adjacent to the submandibular salivary gland histologically. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a SCC i
An adult, captive Taiwanese monkey (Macaca cyclopis) presented clinically with a large, rapidly growing mass located in the crus of the left hind leg. The overlying skin was severely ulcerated and necrotic. Radiographs suggested an invasive neoplasm in soft tissue with no bone involvement. The animal's clinical condition progressively worsened over the next 3 months until it died. Necropsy revealed that the mass infiltrated the surrounding skeletal muscle with no evidence of distant metastasis.
Multilobular tumor of bone detected in a 2.5-year-old male Pekingese dog is reported. Grossly, the neoplasm consisted of multiple, variably sized, gritty, grayish-white to yellow nodules separated by thick collagenous septa. Histologically, these nodules contained multiple lobules of irregularly shaped and sized islands of well-differentiated osteoid and cartilage, separated by anastomosing fibrovascular septa. Chondrocytes and osteocytes were observed in the lacunae and in more osseous islands
South Korea's beekeeping industry has been facing a major crisis due to colony collapse disorder (CCD), manifesting since the winter of 2021. CCD in South Korea is presumed to be caused by a combination of factors, including an abnormal climate, pesticide use, declining source plants, and increased honey bee diseases. We examined the prevalence of 12 major honey bee (<i>Apis mellifera</i>) pathogens by sampling 3,707 colonies with abnormal behavior and suspected pathogen infections from 1,378 ap
A 7-year-old female Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) at the Seoul Grand Park, Korea, died after displaying depression, anorexia, weight loss and rough skin for several days. At necropsy, a solitary friable round mass, which was approximately 12 × 9 × 5 cm and mottled dark red and yellow, was found bulging from the right hepatic lobe. Microscopically, the nonencapsulated, poorly circumscribed mass was composed of solid sheets of neoplastic hepatocytes. In addition, numerous small tan foci, ranging fr
Currently, both the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) have been used to detect Neospora caninum antibodies. Several factors such as the buffers, the conjugate, the pattern of fluorescence, and the cross reactivity with other apicomplexan protozoan, may result in poorly correlated data. The present study was undertaken to develop and evaluate the Neospora agglutination test (NAT) for the detection and quantification of IgG antibodies to N. can
Splenic epithelial cysts are rare in humans and have not been reported in animals, to our knowledge. During a routine medical examination of a 12-y-old castrated male Maltese dog, a splenic mass was found and subsequently removed via splenectomy. Histologically, a well-defined multilocular cyst in the spleen was lined mostly by simple cuboidal, multifocally by stratified cuboidal, or occasionally by stratified squamous epithelium. Immunohistochemically, the lining cells were positive for cytoker
