The Relationship between Economic Growth and Air Pollution—A Regional Comparison between China and South Korea
Min Jiang, Euijune Kim, Youngjin Woo
SJR Q2FWCI 18.6International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

This paper analyzes the interaction between regional economic growth and air pollution in China and Korea. The relationship between gross regional product per capita and industrial emission of sulfur dioxide emission is examined at the regional level using simultaneous equation models covering 286 cities in China and 228 cities and counties in South Korea of the period 2006-2016. The results find that regional differences existed in the relationship between air pollution and economic growth in t

An Application of an Integrated Transport Network–Multiregional CGE Model: a Framework for the Economic Analysis of Highway Projects
Euijune Kim, Geoffrey J. D. Hewings, Chowoon Hong
SJR Q2FWCI 2.2Economic Systems Research

This paper develops a framework for the economic analysis of highway projects that is then used to estimate the dynamic economic effects of a highway project on the economic growth and the regional disparity in Korea. The framework is composed of a transport model and a multiregional Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model. The transport model measures a change in interregional shortest distances and the accessibility due to the highway project. The CGE model estimates the spatial economic ef

SPATIAL INTEGRATION OF URBAN WATER SERVICES AND ECONOMIES OF SCALE
Euijune Kim, Hyun Lee
FWCI 1.1Review of Urban and Regional Development Studies

This research attempts to analyze economic effects of spatial integration of urban water service markets in Korea, employing the notion of economies of scale in terms of cost‐effectiveness. The economies of scale are measured by the elasticity of supply with respect to the production cost from the translog cost function of urban water supply enterprises. It was found that the economies of scale in most urban water utility firms of Seoul Metropolitan region have continuously increased during the

Economic Gain and Loss from Public Infrastructure Investment
Euijune Kim
SJR Q3FWCI 2.3Growth and Change

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of transportation investment on the Korean economy using the dynamic Computable General Equilibrium model. The result of the counterfactual analysis shows that infrastructure investment policy has the advantage of economic growth, but the disadvantage of price inflation. The elasticities of infrastructure investment with respect to GDP, export, private utility, and inflation depend on institutional restrictions on the domestic inflow o

The Impact of Education and R&D Investment on Regional Economic Growth
Youngjin Woo, Euijune Kim, Jaewon Lim
SJR Q1FWCI 11.9SustainabilityOA

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of education and R&D investment on regional economic growth in South Korea. We develop a simultaneous model of production, human capital accumulation, migration, population and physical capital investment of two regions: the Seoul Metropolitan Area and the rest of Korea. We decompose the regional growth path into a quality path and a quantity path to identify how regional economies grow and run simulations to evaluate alternative policies in

This paper is concerned with an analysis of causality between creative industries and urban employment growth. A test of Moran's I finds that there are spatial concentrations of the creative industries in Seoul and major cities in Gyeonggi Province. Also the employment of the creative industry has larger effects on the urban labor growth than that of high-technology sector, while the communication and information sector generating the highest employment effects in urban area. Finally, more regio

Optimal Urban Population Size: National vs Local Economic Efficiency
Euijune Kim, Geoffrey J. D. Hewings, Kyung-Min Nam
SJR Q1FWCI 2.3Urban StudiesOA

This paper explores whether the population size of the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) in Korea is efficient in terms of the national economy. To undertake this analysis, a recursively dynamic interregional computable general equilibrium (ICGE) model with a population module is developed. In this model, the explicit costs and benefits of population growth are estimated by using the industrial value added and consumer price inflation functions for each region. The counter-factual analysis shows tha

AN APPLICATION OF AN INTEGRATED TRANSPORT NETWORK – MULTIREGIONAL CGE MODEL TO THE CALIBRATION OF SYNERGY EFFECTS OF HIGHWAY INVESTMENTS
Euijune Kim, Geoffrey J. D. Hewings
SJR Q2FWCI 0.8Economic Systems Research

A transportation network-multiregional CGE model is applied to estimate the synergy effects of a set of highway projects on value added by region and industrial sector. This synergy effect is defined as a difference between the summation of the net GDP increase from the development of each highway sub-link without spatial linkage and the change in GDP resulting from the concurrent development of all links with spatial linkages. Among nine east–west highways in Korea, the East–West 9 highway incr

Impact of high-speed railroad on regional income inequalities in China and Korea
Min Jiang, Euijune Kim
SJR Q1FWCI 2.1International Journal of Urban Sciences

The purpose of this study is to analyse the impact of opening high-speed railroad (HSR) on the regional income inequality in China and Korea. The convergence models are applied to test the effect of the HSR on regional growth in terms of GRDP per capita across 455 cities and counties along the Beijing–Shanghai HSR corridor and 112 cities and counties along the Seoul–Busan HSR corridor, respectively. The results indicate that at the national level, a trend of convergence emerges during the three-

AN APPLICATION OF INTEGRATED TRANSPORT NETWORK -MULTIREGIONAL CGE MODEL II: CALIBRATION OF NETWORK EFFECTS OF HIGHWAY

FWCI 4.4

Abstract. A transportation network-multiregional CGE model is applied to estimate the network effects of a set of highway projects on the value-added by region and industrial sector for the construction and operation periods. Among nine highways in an east–west direction in Korea, the East–West 9 highway increases the GDP by 0.300% over the 30-period time horizon with 0.016% of the GDP as the network effect. This network effect is defined as a difference between summation of the net increase in
