This study approaches the politics of urban development from within the framework of the emergence of a new multiscalar growth regime and the path dependence of the Korean developmental state. Through a case study of the Songdo New City development in South Korea, this study looks at how the scalar division of labor among various actors has interacted with the emergence of a multiscalar growth regime. We focus on the logic by which different scales of governmental and nongovernmental actors coop

Cultural Festivals and Regional Identities in South Korea

SJR Q1Environment and Planning D Society and Space

This paper extends the literature in cultural festivals and urban methods to consider a case where the objectives of local government in holding a cultural festival exceeded economic development. In the city of Gwangju in South Korea, authorities initiated the Biennale exhibition to replace the troubling image of its political history with the new image of a city of art. This attempted transformation faced resistance from citizens who wanted to protect and develop Gwangju's own political identit

Spatial Capability for Understanding Gendered Mobility for Korean Christian Immigrant Women in Los Angeles
HaeRan Shin
SJR Q1FWCI 3.9Urban Studies

This paper suggests a new concept, ‘spatial capability’, for understanding how women’s freedom of mobility is systematically constrained. Based on the capability approach, it demonstrates that women’s adaptive daily culture causes individual agents voluntarily to limit their mobility. Through the orally expressed experiences of 42 married Korean immigrant women in Los Angeles, this research effectively argues how the marginalisation of the subjects in the migration decision, along with their lim

The Regime of Urban Informality in Migration: Accommodating Undocumented Chosǒnjok Migrants in their Receiving Community in Seoul, South Korea
HaeRan Shin, So‐Young Park
SJR Q2FWCI 3.0Pacific Affairs

This study looks at how a regime of urban informality has taken shape in a migrant receiving community in Seoul, South Korea. It investigates how actors from the public sector and the private sector came to help undocumented Chosŏnjok migrants stay in the Kuro/Taerim area of Seoul regardless of their legal status. We view such practices as a response to local changes provoked by shifts in the geopolitical environment and fluctuating national policies. Based on longitudinal fieldwork, including i

SJR Q2FWCI 5.2Journal of Environmental Policy & Planning

This paper analyses environmental narratives in the legislative stages presented in UK white papers, the Prime Minister's speeches, and the Queen's speeches, all of which were released between 1997 and 2011, during the regimes either of New Labour (1997–2010) or of the currently governing Coalition (2010–). This research acknowledges that the link between risk perception and environmental policy is strong because environmental policy narratives either reflect or influence risk perceptions, or bo

HaeRan Shin
SJR Q1FWCI 2.9Eurasian Geography and Economics

By exploring im/mobilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper theorizes its effects on the interplay between mobility and governance as well as contributing to debates on the city, power, and spatial strategy. To explain governing power in the rearrangement of im/mobilities and urban life during the pandemic, the paper employs the concept of "governmobility." The term refers to governing through (im)mobility, and the technological self-governance discussed is not only con
