The aim of this study was to explore the effects of nutritional manipulations on the occurrence and progression of age-related pathologic lesions in male Fischer 344 rats. The following nutritional regimens were studied: (a) ad libitum feeding, (b) food restriction initiated at 6 weeks of age, (c) food restriction initiated at 6 months of age, (d) food restriction limited to a period of early life (6 weeks to 6 months of age), (e) protein restriction without caloric restriction. The major age-re
The lifespan of the tooth is influenced by the periodontal ligament (PDL), a specialized connective tissue that connects the cementum with the tooth socket bone. Generation of a cell line from PDL progenitor/stem cells would allow development of tissue engineering-based regenerative PDL therapy. However, little is known about the characteristics of PDL progenitor/stem cells because PDL tissue consists of a heterogeneous cell population and there are no pure PDL cell lines. Recently, we succeeded
The ability to consume a meal using one's own teeth influences an individual's quality of life. In today's global aging society, studying the biological changes in aging teeth is important to address this issue. A tooth includes three hard tissues (enamel, dentin, and cementum) and a soft tissue (dental pulp). With advancing age, these tissues become senescent; each tissue exhibits a unique senescent pattern. This review discusses the structural alterations of hard tissues, as well as the molecu
A case of localized cutaneous amyloidosis which developed after a lichen planus-like skin reaction is reported. The amyloid consisted of amyloid fibrils enveloped by heparan sulphate granules. These amyloid fibrils reacted to anti-human keratin antibody, indicating an epidermal origin for the fibrils.
A great number of patients around the world experience tooth loss that is attributed to irretrievable damage of the periodontium caused by deep caries, severe periodontal diseases or irreversible trauma. The periodontium is a complex tissue composed mainly of two soft tissues and two hard tissues; the former includes the periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue and gingival tissue, and the latter includes alveolar bone and cementum covering the tooth root. Tissue engineering techniques are therefore re
Repair of injured peripheral nerve is thought to play important roles in tissue homeostasis and regeneration. Recent experiments have demonstrated enhanced functional recovery of damaged neurons by some types of somatic stem cells. It remains unclear, however, if periodontal ligament (PDL) stem cells possess such functions. We recently developed a multipotent clonal human PDL cell line, termed cell line 1-17. Here, we investigated the effects of this cell line on neurocytic differentiation, migr
Two cases of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis associated with intrauterine human parvovirus B-19 infection are reported. In these cases, hydrops fetalis was diagnosed with ultrasound at 21 and 22 weeks' gestation after 10 or more days of maternal flu-like symptoms. The outcome was stillbirth in one case and neonatal death in the other. In both cases, intrauterine infection by human parvovirus B-19 was confirmed based on two findings: maternal serum positive for human parvovirus B-19 immunoglobulin
Appropriate mechanical loading during occlusion and mastication play an important role in maintaining the homeostasis of periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2), a matricellular protein, is known to upregulate extracellular matrix production, including collagen in PDL tissue. However, the underlying mechanisms of CTGF/CCN2 in regulation of PDL tissue integrity remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of CTGF/CCN2 on osteo/cementoblastic and
Mechanical loading appears to control proliferation and osteoblastic/cementoblastic differentiation of human PDL stem/progenitor cells through the regulation of Ang II and AT2 by IL-11.
