Although NKT cells has been known to exert protective roles in the development of autoimmune diseases, the functional roles of NKT cells in the downstream events of antibody-induced joint inflammation remain unknown. Thus, we explored the functional roles of NKT cells in antibody-induced arthritis using the K/BxN serum transfer model. NKT cell-deficient mice were resistant to the development of arthritis, and wild-type mice administrated with alpha-galactosyl ceramide, a potent NKT cell activato

Minions for the Rich? Financial Status Changes How Consumers See Products with Anthropomorphic Features
Hye‐Young Kim, Ann L. McGill
SJR Q1FWCI 8.5Journal of Consumer Research

The present research explores how financial status, which influences consumers’ expectations about how companies will treat them, affects consumers’ perceptions and assessments of products that have been given anthropomorphic features by companies. Studies 1 and 2 showed that participants with higher financial status expect more favorable treatment from a humanized entity (e.g., “a self-driving car would prioritize the well-being of the rich over others”). The results of study 3 indicate that pa

Siglec-F–expressing neutrophils are essential for creating a profibrotic microenvironment in renal fibrosis

The roles of neutrophils in renal inflammation are currently unclear. On examining these cells in the unilateral ureteral obstruction murine model of chronic kidney disease, we found that the injured kidney bore a large and rapidly expanding population of neutrophils that expressed the eosinophil marker Siglec-F. We first verified that these cells were neutrophils. Siglec-F+ neutrophils were recently detected in several studies in other disease contexts. We then showed that a) these cells were d

During infection with the hepatitis A virus (HAV), most patients develop mild or asymptomatic disease. However, a small number of patients develop serious, life-threatening hepatitis. We investigated this variability in disease severity by examining 30 Argentinean patients with HAV-induced acute liver failure in a case-control, cross-sectional, observational study. We found that HAV-induced severe liver disease was associated with a 6-amino-acid insertion in TIM1/HAVCR1 (157insMTTTVP), the gene

Effect of reduced renal mass on renal ammonia transporter family, Rh C glycoprotein and Rh B glycoprotein, expression

FWCI 2.7American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology

Kidneys can maintain acid-base homeostasis, despite reduced renal mass, through adaptive changes in net acid excretion, of which ammonia excretion is the predominant component. The present study examines whether these adaptations are associated with changes in the ammonia transporter family members, Rh B glycoprotein (Rhbg) and Rh C glycoprotein (Rhcg). We used normal Sprague-Dawley rats and a 5/6 ablation-infarction model of reduced renal mass; control rats underwent sham operation. After 1 wk,

Innate lymphoid cells in asthma: Will they take your breath away?
Hye Young Kim, Dale T. Umetsu, Rosemarie H. DeKruyff
SJR Q1FWCI 6.1European Journal of ImmunologyOA

Asthma is a complex and heterogeneous disease that is characterized by airway hyper-reactivity (AHR) and airway inflammation. Although asthma was long thought to be driven by allergen-reactive TH 2 cells, it has recently become clear that the pathogenesis of asthma is more complicated and associated with multiple pathways and cell types. A very exciting recent development was the discovery of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) as key players in the pathogenesis of asthma. ILCs do not express antigen r

FcgRIII engagement provides activating signals to NKT cells in antibody-induced joint inflammation
Hye Young Kim
SJR Q1FWCI 0.8Journal of Clinical InvestigationOA

NKT cells promote antibody-induced arthritis, but the mechanism by which NKT cells are activated in this model remains unclear. It has been proposed that Fcgamma receptor (FcgammaR) contributes to NKT cell activation in antibody-induced arthritis. To address this issue, we explored the functions of FcgammaR on NKT cells in antibody-induced arthritis. RT-PCR and flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that NKT cells constitutively express surface FcgammaRIII but not FcgammaRI, -II, or -IV. FcgammaR

Basolateral expression of the ammonia transporter family member Rh C glycoprotein in the mouse kidney

Ammonia metabolism and transport are critical for acid-base homeostasis. The ammonia transporter family member Rh C glycoprotein (Rhcg) is expressed in distal renal tubular segments, and its expression is regulated in parallel with renal ammonia metabolism. However, there are inconsistencies in its reported subcellular distribution, with both apical and basolateral Rhcg reported in rat and human kidney and only apical expression in mouse kidney. Because the membrane location of Rhcg is critical
