15Growth charts are curves or tables that facilitate the visualization of anthropometric parameters, and are widely used as an important indicator when evaluating the growth status of children and adolescents. The latest version of the Korean National Growth Charts released in 2007 has raised concerns regarding the inclusion of data from both breastfed and formula-fed infants, higher body mass index (BMI) values in boys, and smaller 3rd percentile values in height-for-age charts. Thus, new growth
The purpose of this study is to investigate the risk factors for recurrence after successful percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD). Recently, PELD has become the most common surgical technique. However, there are only a few studies on the factors causing the reappearance of the symptoms. Between January 2002 and December 2004, 42 patients with recurrent disc herniation after successful PELD were classified as a recurrent group and 42 patients who underwent PELD with a satisfactory res
Over the previous decades, the prevalence of pediatric obesity has been increased in Korea as well as worldwide. Pediatric obesity is associated with comorbidities in childhood and adulthood. We reviewed the prevalence of pediatric obesity using data from the National School Health Examination (NSHE) and the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2; BMI ≥95th percentile for the corresponding sex and age
After balloon dilatation of the pylorus, two thirds of patients with delayed gastric emptying show increased rates of gastric emptying as measured by radioisotope imaging. Mechanical balloon dilatation of the pylorus is a useful method to treat sustained delay of intrathoracic gastric emptying after esophagectomy.
We observed a significant increase in the T1DM incidence. This increase was higher in boys than in girls, and was highest in children aged 0-4 yr. Studies are needed to evaluate the long-term epidemiological trend of T1DM incidence.
Prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in children is increasing and identifying the risk factors for MetS during childhood is an important first step to prevent chronic diseases later in life. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of MetS and cardiometabolic risk factor (CMRF) clustering among Korean children and adolescents and to validate the associated anthropometric and laboratory surrogate markers. We used data from the 2011-2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition
Our initial results suggest that long-term motion segment culture is practical, and the inclusion of vertebral bodies will facilitate anchoring during biomechanical stimulation. Thus, we expect the culture system to provide us with an excellent model for studying the pathomechanics of IVD degeneration and the effects of mechanical stimulation on the biology of IVD cells.
The prevalence of elevated blood pressure (BP) among US children and adolescents has reportedly declined over the past decade. As no Korean data have been analyzed, we aimed to determine recent trends in BP levels among Korean children and adolescents. This study examines data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey segregated into 3 time periods (2007-2009, 2010-2012, and 2013-2015). A total of 7804 Korean children and adolescents aged 10-18 years were included in the an
The prevalence of microalbuminuria is not prominent in obese children and adolescents. Our findings demonstrated that the presence of hypertension and hyperglycemia was associated with microalbuminuria. Especially Hemoglobin A1c was associated with microalbuminuria in youths regardless of weight status. Microalbuminuria in pediatric population can be a helpful marker for the risk of cardiovascular disease.
In this study, expressions of aquaporin (AQP) 1, AQP4, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and vascular endothelial growth factor in blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier and blood-brain barrier (BBB) are examined in rat choroid plexus and peri-infarcted hippocampal formation (HF) following systemic hyponatremia (SH) and permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO). These events are thought to cause the development of hydrocephalic and vasogenic edemas. The importance of CSF overpr
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) requires life-long insulin therapy because of diminished insulin-secretion capability. Glycemic control and glucose monitoring are important to prevent T1DM complications. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) measures glucose level, every one to five minutes, in the interstitial fluid from a subcutaneous sensor and facilitates better glycemic control, reduces hypoglycemia, and is safely used in the pediatric population. CGM can be categorized as retrospective, real
<b><i>Background:</i></b> Obesity, a chronic low-grade inflammatory state, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels are associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in adults. This study aimed to determine the association of hs-CRP and cardiometabolic risk factors, including obesity, prediabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, in the nationally representative data of Korean youth. <b><i>Methods:
