研究室紹介

Professor Hyung Soo Choi's research lab specializes in pediatric hematology-oncology, with a primary focus on high-risk neuroblastoma and the long-term complications of cancer therapy in children. The lab investigates novel therapeutic strategies such as autologous stem cell transplantation and targeted interventions to improve survival and reduce treatment-related toxicity. A significant emphasis is placed on understanding and mitigating anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity and drug-induced organ damage, particularly in the context of high-dose chemotherapy regimens. The lab also explores biomarkers like serum hepcidin for diagnosing iron deficiency in pediatric populations.

Dear Editor: A 15-day-old boy visited our clinic presenting a palm sized erythematous patch located on his left cheek from birth, which was aggravated soon after his 1st vaccination against the hepatitis B virus. A skin biopsy revealed an oval shaped vascular lobules scattered in the dermis. It was a typical 'Cannonball' appearance (Fig. 1A). In high power field, the lobules were groups of ducts composed of proliferated endothelial cells. Tufted angioma (TA) was the most consistent diagnosis.

Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for the treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma (NBL) is an accepted method for restoring bone marrow depression after high dose chemotherapy. We retrospectively analyzed eighty eight cases of NBL that underwent ASCT following marrow ablative therapy at 12 transplant centers of the Korean Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology between January 1996 and September 2000. Seventy nine children were of stage IV NBL and 9 were of stage III with N-myc amplifica

Retrospective Analysis of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantationfor the Treatment of High-Risk Neuroblastoma
Eun Kyung Kim, 강형진, Jeong Ah Park, 최형수, 신희영, 안효섭

Disease relapse after autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (APBSCT) is the main cause of treatment failure in high-risk neuroblastoma (NBL). To reduce relapse, various efforts have been made such as CD34+ selection and double APBSCT. Here the authors reviewed the clinical features and outcomes of highrisk NBL patients and analyzed their survival. The medical records of 36 patients with stage III or IV NBL who underwent APBSCT at Seoul National University Children’s Hospital betw

Serum hepcidin levels and iron parameters in children with iron deficiency
최형수, 송상훈, 이재희, 김희진, 양혜란

Background Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are common nutritional disorders in children. Hepcidin, a peptide hormone produced in the liver, is a central regulator of systemic iron metabolism. We evaluated whether serum hepcidin levels can diagnose ID in children. Methods Sera from 59 children (23 males and 36 females; 5 months to 17 years) were analyzed for hepcidin-25 by ELISA. Patients were classified according to hemoglobin level and iron parameters as: IDA, (N=17), ID (

A 13 year-old girl with osteosarcoma and pulmonary tumor recurrence developed acute renal failure following high dose methotrexate (12 g/m2) therapy, she had previously tolerated high dose methotrexate and her renal and hepatic functions were normal. Briefly, 48 hours after beginning methotrexate infusion her methotrexate concentration and creatinine level were 1338.8μM/L and 5.8 mg/dl, respectively. Grade IV oral mucositis and neutropenia with fever developed at 144 hours after MTX infusion. Hy

Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumors (ES/PNET) are a group of malignant tumors with varying degrees of neuroectodermal differentiation. Although it may develop in any organs, ES/PNET originating from small intestine is exceedingly rare. We experienced a 9-year-old girl presenting with abdominal pain, melena, and iron deficiency anemia. Imaging work-up showed multiple masses in the small bowel and omentum with disseminated peritoneal seeding nodules, indicating lymphoma as the most like
