Professor Hyungjin Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of systemic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and their systemic complications, particularly in the context of metabolic, neurological, and infectious diseases. The lab investigates the role of chronic inflammation markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and autoantibodies in conditions like dyslipidaemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and Parkinson’s disease. It also explores hormonal influences—both endogenous and exogenous—on gout risk and examines the long-term health consequences of undernutrition in relation to tuberculosis. The lab emphasizes early detection, risk stratification, and interdisciplinary clinical implications through large-scale cohort studies and case reports.

Plasma CRP was associated with an increased risk of dyslipidaemia, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in the general population.
Shorter exposure to endogenous estrogen was associated with a high risk of gout. Conversely, exposure to exogenous estrogen such as OC and HRT was associated with an increased risk of gout.
In this study, RA was associated with an increased risk of PD, and seropositivity of RA conferred an augmented risk of PD. The findings suggest that physicians should be aware of the elevated risk of PD in patients with RA and promptly refer patients to a neurologist at onset of early motor symptoms of PD without synovitis.

We report three cases of pilomatricoma, one in the infrahyoid neck and the others in the preauricular area. In all cases, CT showed well marginated soft tissue masses that were located mainly in the subcutaneous fat, partly attaching to the overlying skin. Metabolic syndrome is an important risk factor for the gout in young men. In particular, the association between MetS and gout was greater in young and non-obese men. Management of MetS in young men will be important for future gout prevention.
