Superhydrophobic turbulent drag reduction as a function of surface grating parameters
Hyungmin Park, Guangyi Sun, Chang‐Jin Kim
SJR Q1FWCI 18.4Journal of Fluid Mechanics

Abstract Despite the confirmation of slip flows and successful drag reduction (DR) in small-scaled laminar flows, the full impact of superhydrophobic (SHPo) DR remained questionable because of the sporadic and inconsistent experimental results in turbulent flows. Here we report a systematic set of bias-free reduction data obtained by measuring the skin-friction drags on a SHPo surface and a smooth surface at the same time and location in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) flow. Each monolithic sam

SJR Q1FWCI 4.2Journal of Fluid Mechanics

In this paper, we present a new passive control device for form-drag reduction in flow over a two-dimensional bluff body with a blunt trailing edge. The device consists of small tabs attached to the upper and lower trailing edges of a bluff body to effectively perturb a two-dimensional wake. Both a wind-tunnel experiment and large-eddy simulation are carried out to examine its drag-reduction performance. Extensive parametric studies are performed experimentally by varying the height and width of

Superhydrophobic drag reduction in turbulent flows: a critical review
Hyungmin Park, Chang‐Hwan Choi, Chang‐Jin Kim
SJR Q1FWCI 7.3Experiments in FluidsOA

Abstract Superhydrophobic (SHPo) surfaces have been investigated vigorously since around 2000 due in large part to their unique potential for hydrodynamic frictional drag reduction without any energy or material input. The mechanisms and key factors affecting SHPo drag reduction have become relatively well understood for laminar flows by around 2010, as has been reviewed before [Lee et al. Exp Fluids 57:176 (2016)], but the progress for turbulent flows has been rather tortuous. While improved fl

Aerodynamic characteristics of flying fish in gliding flight
Hyungmin Park, Haecheon Choi
SJR Q1FWCI 67.1Journal of Experimental Biology

The flying fish (family Exocoetidae) is an exceptional marine flying vertebrate, utilizing the advantages of moving in two different media, i.e. swimming in water and flying in air. Despite some physical limitations by moving in both water and air, the flying fish has evolved to have good aerodynamic designs (such as the hypertrophied fins and cylindrical body with a ventrally flattened surface) for proficient gliding flight. Hence, the morphological and behavioral adaptations of flying fish to

Mixing enhancement behind a backward-facing step using tabs
Hyungmin Park, Woo-Pyung Jeon, Haecheon Choi, Jung Yul Yoo
SJR Q1FWCI 0.9Physics of Fluids

Mixing enhancement behind a backward-facing step is experimentally investigated using multiple tabs located at the edge of the backward-facing step. The Reynolds number is 24000 based on the free-stream velocity and step height with a turbulent boundary layer flow at the inlet. A parametric study is performed to find the optimal tab configuration of minimizing the reattachment length. The parameters of the tab are its height and spanwise width, and the spanwise spacing between two adjacent tabs.

Near-wall rising behaviour of a deformable bubble at high Reynolds number
Hyeonju Jeong, Hyungmin Park
SJR Q1FWCI 1.5Journal of Fluid Mechanics

The dynamics of a large deformable bubble ( $\mathit{Re}\sim \mathit{O}(10^{3})$ ) rising near a vertical wall in quiescent water is experimentally investigated. The reference (without the wall) rising path of the considered bubble is a two-dimensional zigzag. For a range of wall configurations (i.e. initial wall distance and boundary condition), using high-speed shadowgraphy, various rising behaviours such as periodic bouncing, sliding, migrating away, and non-periodic oscillation without colli

Water entry of rounded cylindrical bodies with different aspect ratios and surface conditions
Nayoung Kim, Hyungmin Park
SJR Q1FWCI 3.5Journal of Fluid Mechanics

In the present study, we experimentally investigate water surface deformation due to the impact of rounded cylindrical projectiles with different aspect ratios (1.0–8.0). The subsequent jet and splash formation is closely related to the dynamics of an underwater cavity. To control the cavity formation, two kinds of surface conditions (smooth and rough) are applied to the front parts of the projectiles, and two impact speeds are considered. The Froude, Reynolds and Weber numbers are in the ranges

Kinematic control of aerodynamic forces on an inclined flapping wing with asymmetric strokes
Hyungmin Park, Haecheon Choi
SJR Q1FWCI 94.9Bioinspiration & Biomimetics

In the present study, we conduct an experiment using a one-paired dynamically scaled model of an insect wing, to investigate how asymmetric strokes with different wing kinematic parameters are used to control the aerodynamics of a dragonfly-like inclined flapping wing in still fluid. The kinematic parameters considered are the angles of attack during the mid-downstroke (α(md)) and mid-upstroke (α(mu)), and the duration (Δτ) and time of initiation (τ(p)) of the pitching rotation. The present drag

In the present study, we propose a theoretical framework to predict the recovery rates of platelets and white blood cells in the process of centrifugal separation of whole blood contained in a tube for the preparation of platelet-rich plasma. Compared to previous efforts to optimize or standardize the protocols of centrifugation, we try to further the physical background (i.e., based on the multiphase flow phenomena) of analysis to develop a universal approach that can be applied to widely diffe
