Professor Hyunjung Lim's research lab focuses on the epidemiology of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), with a particular emphasis on metabolic health, obesity, and their socioeconomic and lifestyle determinants in South Korea and the broader Western Pacific region. The lab investigates how dietary patterns, weight perception, and socioeconomic status influence the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and related health outcomes across different age groups and populations. Using nationally representative survey data and cohort studies, the lab aims to inform public health policy and intervention strategies tailored to regional and demographic disparities.

Over half of Korean adolescents had misperception on own weight status, the rates varied by gender and socioeconomic status. Weight misperception is associated with health-related outcomes compared to peers with accurate perceptions about own weight status.
These results suggest that the quality of carbohydrates consumed is associated with the risk of obesity and hypertension. However, the cross-sectional design does not preclude reverse causality.

The Western Pacific region is a diverse region experiencing fast economic growth and nutrition transition. We systematically examined 94 cohort studies on the associations of dietary and other lifestyle factors on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region. There were differences in NCDs risk factors and dietary factors by national income and region. Accordingly, measures should be taken to suit the situation in each country. Our findings have significance for health workers and health policies preventing and controlling the rise of NCDs.
