15Propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) has been reported to improve long-term outcome following cancer surgery, when compared with inhalation agents. However, such investigational reports are still controversial, and no studies have been conducted in relation to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) surgery. The present study aimed to compare the favorable effects of TIVA versus inhalation agents on recurrence-free survival and overall survival after curative resection of NSCLC. This re
The initial nutritional delivery policy for patients with sepsis admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) has not been fully elucidated. We aimed to determine whether an initial adequate nutrition supply and route of nutrition delivery during the first week of sepsis onset improve clinical outcomes of critically ill patients with sepsis. We reviewed adult patients with sepsis and septic shock in the ICU in a single tertiary teaching hospital between 31 November 2013 and 20 May 2017. Poisson log

Long-term glucocorticoid (GC) exposure causes immunosuppression; therefore, the risk of cancer may be increased in long-term GC users. We investigated whether long-term GC use is associated with a higher risk of cancer in the population without cancer. A population-based cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Service was conducted among the South Korean adult population in 2010. Long-term GC users were defined as those who were prescribed a continuous supply of oral GC for ≥3
This retrospective cohort study investigated the association between in-hospital survival and two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography within 24 hours after the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in patients who underwent in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ICPR) after in-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest (IHCA). The 2D-echo and non-2D-echo groups comprised eligible patients who underwent transthoracic 2D echocardiography performed by the cardiology team within 24 hours after ROSC and th
Background We sought to investigate the risk of psychological diseases among coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) survivors in South Korea. Methods The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) COVID-19 cohort database, comprising COVID-19 patients and a control population from January 1, 2020 to June 4, 2020, was used in this study. COVID-19 patients were defined as individuals who were confirmed as COVID-19 positive, regardless of disease severity, and COVID-19 survivors were defined as individu
Correlations between patient survival, initial opioid dose, final opioid dose, and the rate of increase of opioid dosage could provide useful information for clinicians treating unresectable pancreatic cancer patients.
Effective and adequate opioid use and prevention of postoperative complications are important for enhanced recovery after surgery. We examined the effects of postoperative opioid use and postoperative complications on overall survival and recurrence-free survival after esophageal cancer surgery. This retrospective cohort study analyzed the records of patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer who underwent the Ivor Lewis operation between January 2005 and December 2011. We collected data on total
After elective ear surgery with cisatracurium neuromuscular blockade, 48 adults were randomly assigned to receive neostigmine: (a) at appearance of the fourth twitch of a 'train-of-four'; (b) at loss of fade to train-of-four; or (c) at loss of fade to double-burst stimulation, all monitored using a TOF-Watch SX® on one arm. For each of these conditions, the recovery from train-of-four (TOF) ratio was measured in parallel objectively using a TOF-Watch SX placed on the contralateral arm. The media
A 6.4% of sepsis survivors in South Korea were newly diagnosed with a sleep disorder within 1 year of sepsis diagnosis. Although both pre- and post-sepsis sleep disorders were associated with a higher 5-year all-cause mortality rate, the risk of the 5-year all-cause mortality in the post-sepsis sleep disorder group was higher than that in the pre-sepsis sleep disorder group.
Among preoperative opioid-naive patients in South Korea, 6.1% became new long-term opioid users after lung cancer surgery. Certain factors are potential risk factors for new long-term opioid use, which could be associated with poorer long-term survival outcomes.
