Chemical stimulation of geothermal reservoirs via selective mineral dissolution with eco-friendly chelating agents has been recently proposed as a novel method complementary to hydraulic stimulation. In our previous study, we demonstrated rapid and significant permeability enhancement accompanied by the creation of voids due to the selective dissolution of biotite in fractured granite at 200 °C under confining stress. However, the process of permeability enhancement and its optimum pH have not b
Hydrothermally altered basaltic rocks are widely distributed and more accessible than fresh basaltic rocks, making them attractive feedstocks for permanent CO2 storage through mineralization. This study investigates the reactivity and dissolution behaviors of altered basalt during the reaction with CO2-rich fluids and compares it with unaltered basalt through batch hydrothermal experiments using a brine that simulates reservoir conditions with 5 MPa CO2 gas at 10
Geological storage and mineralization of CO2 in mafic/ultramafic reservoirs faces challenges including limited effective porosity, permeability, and rock reactivity; difficulties in using seawater for CO2 capture; and uncontrolled carbonation. This study introduces a CO2 capture, storage, and mineralization approach with the utilization of biobased biodegradable chelating agents and seawater. An acidic chelating agent solution is used to increase effective porosi
Abstract Natural and anthropogenic chelating ligands play important roles in promoting mineral dissolution during water-rock interactions. To address the remaining issue of how chelating ligands participate in the dissolution of minerals, this study investigated the dissolution characteristics of seven types of silicate minerals in the presence of a chelating ligand, N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-L-glutamic acid (GLDA), which is a glutamic acid derivative, through batch dissolution experiments. The res
Enhanced weathering of silicate minerals is a promising approach for reducing atmospheric CO2 levels by increasing the aquatic pH and facilitating CO2 dissolution. However, the slow and unsustainable dissolution of silicate minerals in natural environments remains a challenge. This study proposed a new CO2 capture system that uses the combined effect of amino acids and NaCl to promote mineral dissolution, and its characteristics were investigated experimentally.
Industrial waste utilization for carbon dioxide (CO2) mineralization offers a highly promising approach to significantly reduce CO2 emissions; however, it faces the challenge of consumption of huge amounts of chemicals without their recovery. This study proposes an improved CO2 mineralization process that employs a highly recyclable solution of environmentally friendly chelating agent, N,N-Dicarboxymethyl glutamic acid (GLDA) enriched with NaHCO3 and involves the temperature swing-facilitated di
Efficient valorization of woody biomass ash is essential for advancing sustainable bioenergy systems and supporting a low-carbon circular economy. A key challenge lies in safely managing heavy metals while recovering valuable resources. In this study, we developed a sustainable process for simultaneously producing high-purity potassium fertilizer (KHCO 3 ) and industrial raw material (CaCO 3 ) from woody biomass ash. This is achieved using a recyclable CO 2 -enriched solution containing a green
Illegal dumping sites are usually characterized by complex contamination situations due to the presence of multiple contamination sources. To improve the efficiency of illegal waste dumping site remediation, this study developed a numerical model considering the effects of groundwater levels and hydraulic gradient changes on remediation operations. Using this model, the most likely sources of contamination for 1,4-dioxane at an illegal waste site in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, were successfully ide
