15We describe a novel method for authenticating multicast packets that is robust against packet loss. Our focus is to minimize the size of the communication overhead required to authenticate the packets. Our approach is to encode the hash values and the signatures with Rabin's Information Dispersal Algorithm (IDA) to construct an authentication scheme that amortizes a single signature operation over multiple packets. This strategy is especially efficient in terms of space overhead, because just th
The results suggest the urgent need for increased planning and coordination between the child welfare and mental health systems, including provision of parenting support as part of mental health treatment for mothers.

Applications such as e-commerce payment protocols, electronic contract signing, and certified e-mail delivery require that fair exchange be assured. A fair-exchange protocol allows two parties to exchange items in a fair way so that either each party gets the other's item, or neither party does. We describe a novel method of constructing very efficient fair-exchange protocols by distributing the computation of RSA signatures. Specifically, we employ multisignatures based on the RSA-signature sch
Polymorphisms in DNA repair genes may be associated with differences in the capacity to repair DNA damage and thereby influence an individual's susceptibility to smoking-related cancer. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the potential association of 7 XPC polymorphisms (-449G-->C, -371G-->A, -27G-->C, Val499Arg, PAT-/+, IVS11-5C-->A and Lys939Gln) and their haplotypes with lung cancer risk in a Korean population. XPC genotypes were determined in 432 lung cancer patients and 432 healthy con
Family and environmental stressors common to many children in poverty, rather than just homeless and doubled-up episodes, were associated with young children's poor health and cognitive development and high health care use. Practitioners need to identify and respond to parental and family needs for support services in addition to housing assistance to effectively improve the health and development of young children who experience residential instability, particularly those in homeless families.
Network coding has been known as a spectrally efficient technique in wireless networks. However, when it is applied to a two-way relay channel (TWRC), it suffers from performance degradation caused by the asymmetric position of the relay. In this paper, we suggest remedying this problem by using hierarchical modulation at the source node. We investigate how hierarchical modulation can be incorporated and optimized with network coding. Our results are encouraging in that hierarchically modulated
Trastuzumab resistance in HER2-positive breast cancer is associated with a poorer prognosis. HSP90 is thought to play a major role in such resistance, but N-terminal inhibitors of this target have had little success. We sought to investigate the utility of NCT-547, a novel, rationally-designed C-terminal HSP90 inhibitor in the context of overcoming trastuzumab resistance. NCT-547 treatment significantly induced apoptosis without triggering the heat shock response (HSR), accompanied by caspase-3/
Background: Level of health literacy affects health status. The purpose of this study was to examine and evaluate studies related to picture-based health education materials for people with low health literacy. Methods: Articles from 2001 through October 2015 were searched in the PubMed, CINAHL, and ERIC databases on the web, followed by manual searches of the references in those articles. Results: Of the 11 studies that met the inclusion criteria for this review, 10 showed a positive effect of
These findings suggest that the COX-2 8473T>C polymorphism could be used as a marker for the genetic susceptibility to adenocarcinoma of the lung.
Objective: This longitudinal study followed 5,978 children in out-of-home care to examine whether placement and permanency outcomes differ between children with and without a history of inpatient mental health treatment. Method: Data were drawn from child welfare and Medicaid records from the state of Illinois. Logistic regression and survival analysis were applied. Results: A history of inpatient mental health treatment preceding out-of-home placement was associated with an increased risk for p
