Professor Jung Tae Park's research lab specializes in the design and synthesis of advanced functional nanomaterials for energy and environmental applications. The lab focuses on developing hybrid nanostructures—particularly titanium dioxide, silica, and metal-organic frameworks—through surface engineering techniques such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and sol-gel processes. Key research directions include the creation of hierarchical porous oxides for high-efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells, anti-fogging and anti-reflection coatings for optoelectronic devices, and photoactive antibacterial materials derived from MOFs. The lab emphasizes materials with enhanced surface area, controlled morphology, and improved catalytic or charge transport properties for sustainable energy and biomedical solutions.

Titania (TiO2) nanoparticles were surface-modified via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with hydrophilic poly(oxyethylene) methacrylate (POEM), which can coordinate to the TiO2 precursor, titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP). Following application of a sol–gel process and calcination at 450 °C, TiO2 nanospheres with hierarchical pores were generated, as confirmed by the shifting of conduction bands in TiO2 using UV-visible spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The parti
We present a facile method for producing anti-fogging (AF) and anti-reflection (AR) coating functionalized photoanodes via one-step SiO2 nanoparticle coating for high performance solid state dye-sensitized solar cells (ssDSSCs). The AF and AR coating functionalized photoanodes are prepared by spin-coating of partially aggregated SiO2 colloidal solution. Poly((1-(4-ethenylphenyl)methyl)-3-butyl-imidazolium iodide) (PEBII), prepared via free radical polymerization, is used as a solid electrolyte i
We present a facile and effective method to prepare vertically aligned TiO2 nanorods (NRs) with a high density and rutile/anatase mixture phases on transparent conducting oxide (TCO) glasses. The anatase TiO2 nanoparticles grafted with hydrophilic poly(oxyethylene) methacrylate (POEM), which can coordinate with a TiO2 precursor such as Ti(BuO4), were introduced in the presence of glycine. Following application of a hydrothermal process and calcination at 450 °C, vertically well-aligned TiO2 NRs
High energy conversion efficiencies of 6.6% and 7.5% are demonstrated in solid and liquid states, Pt-free, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), respectively, based on CoS nanoparticles on an organized mesoporous SnO2 (om-SnO2) counter electrode. These results correspond to improvements of 14% and 9%, respectively, compared to a conventional Pt counter electrode and are among the highest values reported for Pt-free DSSCs. The om-SnO2 layer plays a pivotal role as a platform to deposit a large amou
Abstract Organic/inorganic hybrid templates, i.e., aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles grafted with poly(oxyethylene) methacrylate, Al 2 O 3 ‐POEM, are synthesized via surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), as confirmed by Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Upon combining the Al 2 O 3 ‐POEM with titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP), hydrophilic TTIP is selectively confined in the hydrophilic POEM chains through hydrogen
Conventional antibiotic-based treatment of bacterial infections remains one of the most difficult challenges in medicine because of the threat of multidrug resistance caused by indiscriminate abuse. To solve these problems, it is essential to develop an effective antibacterial agent that can be used at a small dose while minimizing the occurrence of multiple resistance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are hyper-porous hybrid materials containing metal ions linked by organic ligands, have
The pseudocapacitors based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the state-of-the-art candidates to improve the future energy storage systems because of their high porosity, diverse functional groups, and potential as the template. In this study, the direct growth of a urea-assisted hierarchically layered cobalt-based MOF (u-hl-MOF) on Ni foam and direct growth of nanorods and nanosheets on the surface of the u-hl-MOF via the MOF-mediated approach without the addition of a cobalt precurs
TiO2 nanoparticles are surface-modified via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with a hydrophilic poly(oxyethylene)methacrylate (POEM), which can coordinate to the Ag precursor, i.e. silver trifluoromethanesulfonate (AgCF3SO3). Following the reduction of Ag ions, a Nb2O5 doping process and calcination at 450 °C, bi-functional Nb-doped TiO2/Ag ternary nanostructures are generated. The resulting nanostructures are characterized by energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EF-TEM)
Abstract High efficiency dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are fabricated with a heterostructured photoanode that consists of a 500‐nm‐thick organized mesoporous TiO 2 (om‐TiO 2 ) interfacial layer (IF layer), a 7 or 10‐μm thick nanocrystalline TiO 2 layer (NC layer), and a 2‐μm‐thick mesoporous Bragg stack (meso‐BS layer) as the bottom, middle and top layers, respectively. An om‐TiO 2 layer with a high porosity, transmittance, and interconnectivity is prepared via a sol‐gel process, in which a
