Abrupt Holocene climate shifts in coastal East Asia, including the 8.2 ka, 4.2 ka, and 2.8 ka BP events, and societal responses on the Korean peninsula

Holocene abrupt cooling events have long attracted attention in academia due to public concern that similar rapid changes may reappear in the near future. Thus, considerable progress has been made toward understanding these short-term cooling events in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in Europe and North America. However, few relevant studies have been conducted in coastal East Asia due to a lack of undisturbed sample materials appropriate for paleoclimate studies. In this study, we examine

A Review on Hierarchical Origami and Kirigami Structure for Engineering Applications
박정재, Phillip Won, 고승환

Origami and kirigami originally serving as the ancient papercraft techniques also provide the way of developing functional hierarchical structures for various engineering applications, for example, stretchable energy devices, wearable sensors, and self-folding scaffolds with tissue engineering, etc. The techniques based on origami/kirigami concept involve folding and cutting of substrates to provide a wide range of applications in different length scale from meter to micro/nanometer size. This s

Debauchery and Original Sin: The Currency Composition of Sovereign Debt
Charles Engel, Jungjae Park
SJR Q1FWCI 10.2Journal of the European Economic Association

Abstract We present a model that accounts for the “mystery of original sin” and the surge in local-currency borrowing by emerging economies in the recent decade. We quantitatively investigate the currency composition of sovereign debt in the presence of two types of limited enforcement frictions arising from a government's monetary and debt policy: strategic currency debasement and default on sovereign debt. Local-currency debt obligations act as a better consumption hedge against income shocks

Abstract. Here we describe LegacyClimate 1.0, a dataset of the reconstruction of the mean July temperature (TJuly), mean annual temperature (Tann), and annual precipitation (Pann) from 2594 fossil pollen records from the Northern Hemisphere, spanning the entire Holocene, with some records reaching back to the Last Glacial Period. Two reconstruction methods, the modern analog technique (MAT) and weighted averaging partial least squares regression (WA-PLS), reveal similar results regarding spatial

Abstract. A mismatch between model- and proxy-based Holocene climate change, known as the “Holocene conundrum”, may partially originate from the poor spatial coverage of climate reconstructions in, for example, Asia, limiting the number of grid cells for model–data comparisons. Here we investigate hemispheric, latitudinal, and regional mean time series and time-slice anomaly maps of pollen-based reconstructions of mean annual temperature, mean July temperature, and annual precipitation from 1908

The 8.2 ka cooling event in coastal East Asia: High-resolution pollen evidence from southwestern Korea

SJR Q1FWCI 2.1Scientific ReportsOA

In this study, we present a high-resolution multi-proxy record (pollen, magnetic susceptibility, and mean grain size) from Bigeum Island, South Korea, which mainly showed early Holocene paleoenvironmental change. Bigeum pollen records indicated that early Holocene climate variations in coastal East Asia were principally controlled by the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Most importantly, the 8.2 ka cooling event was clearly recognized for the first time in coastal East Asia, where fe

The Link between ENSO-like Forcing and Hydroclimate Variability of Coastal East Asia during the Last Millennium

Inconsistent reconstructions of East Asian hydroclimate for the last millennium significantly limit our understanding of the mechanisms behind climate variability during the medieval climate anomaly (MCA) and little ice age (LIA) in the region. In this study, we present new high-resolution multiproxy records (diatom, δ13C, C/N, TS) from the Mulyoungari swamp, Jeju Island, South Korea. Our results indicate that El Niño southern oscillation-like variations caused the dry MCA/wet LIA pat

A modern pollen–temperature calibration data set from Korea and quantitative temperature reconstructions for the Holocene
Jungjae Park
SJR Q1FWCI 1.2The Holocene

Modern surface pollen samples from the mountains along the east coast of Korea were used to derive pollen–temperature transfer functions. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and detrended canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA) were performed to test the robustness of the relationship between the modern pollen assemblages and temperatures. The relationship exhibited a high correlation (DCA, r = −0.887; DCCA, r = −0.908). The performance of the best weighted averaging partial least squares (
