We numerically demonstrate a tunable dual-band terahertz metamaterial absorber (MA) with near-unity absorption using single-layer square graphene ring structure with T-shaped graphene strips. By periodically loading four T-shaped graphene strips to the square graphene ring periodic array without additionally increasing the size of MA device, the pre-existing resonant frequency will have a red shift and simultaneously a new resonance will be generated at higher frequency for achieving a dual-band
A 60-GHz compact dual-mode on-chip bandpass filter (BPF) is presented using gallium arsenide (GaAs) technology. To demonstrate the working mechanism of the proposed BPF, an LC equivalent circuit model is conceived and analyzed for further investigation of the transmission poles and zeros. Finally, a prototype of the BPF is fabricated and tested to validate the proposed idea, whose simulated and measured results are in good agreement. The measurements show that it has a center frequency of 58.7 G
In this paper, a dual-band metamaterial absorber in the terahertz frequencies is proposed and its refractive index sensing characteristics is analyzed. The metamaterial structure is designed using a square metal ring with four T-shaped strips loaded outside of the ring, where the metal periodic array is on top of a silicon wafer backed with a metal ground plane. The resonant frequencies of the absorber are at 0.89 and 1.36 THz, whose absorption rates are both over 99% under normal TE and TM pola
Two novel microstrip patch antennas with multiple parasitic patches and shorting vias have been presented for the bandwidth enhancement. Based on the conventional triangular patch antenna, two more resonances can be obtained with the introduction of multiple parasitic patches, and consequently, the antenna bandwidth can be broadened. Parametric analysis of the patches has been studied for the verification of bandwidth enhancement. An example of the proposed antenna with multiple parasitic patche
A compact fifth-order wideband bandpass filter (BPF) using simple coupled lines with sharp rolloff skirts is proposed in this letter. A bandpass filter (BPF) with a notched band is designed based on the high-order mode of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs). The high-efficiency passband is developed from the first high-order mode (Mode 1) of SSPPs. Compared with the fundamental mode having low-pass response, the Mode 1 has the inherent bandpass response; thus, the BPF generated by Mode 1 does not need to add an additional high-pass filtering structure and employ a gradient transition structure for excitation. The Mode 1 o
This article presents a new decoupling and matching network (DMN) design for symmetric, single- and dual-band two-element antenna arrays. The DMNs use parallel-line-based coupling elements. The decoupling between the output ports of the proposed DMN and the reflection coefficients at these ports is obtained using the scattering parameters of the coupled antenna array and those of the DMN. These are clearly expressed as functions of the DMN's design parameters. These design parameters are determi
A dual-layer patch antenna using multiple parasitic patches for the bandwidth enhancement is presented. Two additional resonances can be obtained with the help of the parasitic patches of the antenna. Consequently, a wide impedance bandwidth of 17% (|S11| <; -10 dB) can be achieved. Then, without the increase of the antenna array footprint, the combinations of two decoupling techniques (i.e., metalized via walls and short-circuited stepped-impedance structures as the neutralized networks) are ad
Three-line coupled structure (TLCS) is employed in the design of the filtering power divider (FPD) to achieve a broad fractional bandwidth and good frequency selectivity in this paper. A detailed theoretical analysis of the proposed FPD is presented by using the calculated method of impedance matrix deduction. To validate the design concept, the proposed initial FPD prototype is electromagnetically simulated, whose performance shows good consistency with that of the proposed theoretical calculat
The recent rise of active materials offers new opportunities for dynamically tunable metamaterial devices. However, metamaterial devices with a dynamically switchable function are in high demand. Ultra-wideband spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) based on compact balanced coplanar stripline (CPS) waveguides are proposed. Compared with the conventional CPS-based terahertz (THz) SSPP unit cell, the proposed one has achieved a size reduction of 55.2% under the condition of the same asymptotic frequency. The propagation and attenuation characteristics of the proposed SSPP waveguide can be easily manipulated by adjusting the geometry dimensions of the SSPP unit cell. It indicates that th
A T-shaped stub-loaded ring-resonator (SLRR) slot etched on the ground plane or on the radiating patch has been designed and analyzed for antenna applications. Compared with the conventional ring slot, the two resonant frequencies of the proposed SLRR-slot can be lowered, and can also be tunable by varying the parameters of the four T-shaped stubs. To validate the design concept, a tri-band printed antenna and a dual band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna using the SLRR-slot on the ground pla
A novel but very simple bandpass filter using just three pairs of coupled lines with multiple transmission zeros (TZs) and transmission poles is proposed in this letter. In this letter, a GaAs-based wideband spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) waveguide with super compact size is presented at millimeter-wave regime. The periodic SSPP unit cell consists of a longitudinal slot and a meander slot in transversal direction, and its corresponding waveguide has good low-pass filtering feature. The momentum of microstrip line for measurement feeding to the SSPPs can be well matched without any gradient transition structures. To apply this SSPP waveguide into the desi
Terahertz (THz) waves have garnered significant interest across various fields, particularly in high-sensitivity sensing applications. Metamaterials can be employed in THz sensors, specifically for refractive index sensing and pesticide detection due to their high-sensitivity characteristics. In this Article, a dual-band flexible THz metamaterial sensor based on polyimide is proposed for refractive index and pesticide sensing, which is fabricated using ultraviolet (UV) lithography technology and
