鹿島教授の研究室は、聴覚と視覚の情報統合が言語認識に与える影響を、特に日本語と英語話者の間での違いに注目して研究しています。特に、音声と唇の動きの不一致条件下での知覚的統合(マクガーカル効果)の強さが言語に依存するメカニズムを解明しています。また、高齢化に伴う視覚的言語情報への依存の増加や、音楽訓練が認知機能や脳の効率に与える影響についても、若年層から高齢者に至るまでの発達的・神経的変化を明らかにしています。
