Kei Ito教授の研究室は、宇宙の初期期に形成された高赤方偏移の静止銀河(Quiescent Galaxies)の性質を、ジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡(JWST)をはじめとする最新の観測データを用いて解明しています。特に、z > 2.5の高赤方偏移領域における質量の大きな静止銀河の集団的構造や、それらの星形成活動の抑制、そして合体過程の解明に注力しています。また、X線・電波・赤外域からの多波長的アプローチにより、銀河の進化とその環境要因の関係を統合的に探求しています。

Abstract We present a comparison of the spatial distributions of Ly α emitters (LAEs) and massive star-forming and quiescent galaxies (SFGs and QGs) at 2 < z < 4.5. We use the photometric redshift catalog to select SFGs and QGs and an LAE catalog from intermediate/narrow bands obtained from the Subaru Telescope and Isaac Newton Telescope in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). We report the spectroscopic confirmation of a merging pair of massive quiescent galaxies at z = 3.44. Using JWST observations, we confirm that the two galaxies lie at a projected separation of 4.5 kpc with a velocity offset of ∼680 km s −1 ( δ z ∼ 0.01). The pair resides in the core of a known rich overdensity of galaxies, dubbed the “Cosmic Vine”.
