Competition and cooperation among orders is at the heart of many-body physics in strongly correlated materials and leads to their rich physical properties. It is crucial to investigate what impact many-body physics has on extreme nonlinear optical phenomena, with the possibility of controlling material properties by light. However, the effect of competing orders and electron-electron correlations on highly nonlinear optical phenomena has not yet been experimentally clarified. Here, we investigat
Highly nonlinear optical phenomena can provide access to properties of electronic systems which are otherwise difficult to access through conventional linear optical spectroscopies. In particular, high-harmonic generation (HHG) in crystalline solids is strikingly different from that in atomic gases, and it enables us to access electronic properties such as the band structure, Berry curvature, and valence electron density. Here, we show that polarization-resolved HHG measurements with band-gap re
The coherent interaction of light with matter imprints the phase information of the light field on the wave function of the photon-dressed electronic state. A driving electric field, together with a stable phase that is associated with the optical probe pulses, enables the role of the dressed state in the optical response to be investigated. We observed optical absorption strengths modulated on a subcycle time scale in a GaAs quantum well in the presence of a multicycle terahertz driving pulse u
Floquet engineering is a promising way of controlling quantum system with photon-dressed states on an ultrafast time scale. So far, the energy structure of Floquet states in solids has been intensively investigated. However, the dynamical aspects of the photon-dressed states under ultrashort pulse have not been explored yet. Their dynamics become highly sensitive to the driving field transients, and thus, understanding them is crucial for ultrafast manipulation of a quantum state. Here, we obser
High harmonic emissions from crystalline solids contain rich information on the dynamics of electrons driven by intense infrared laser fields and have been intensively studied owing to their potential use as a probe of microscopic electronic structures. In particular, the ability to measure the temporal response of high harmonics may allow us to investigate electron dynamics directly. Here, we demonstrate a Mach–Zehnder high harmonic interferometer, where high harmonics are generated in each pat
Thermal desorption aerosol mass spectrometers (TDAMSs) with electron ionization are widely used for quantitative analysis of aerosol chemical composition, and the ionization efficiency of evolved gas molecules from aerosol particles is an important parameter for such analysis. We performed laboratory experiments using a custom-made TDAMS to investigate the key factors affecting ionization efficiency. Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and ammonium iodide (NH4I) were used as test compounds because their t
Strong interaction of a terahertz (THz) wave with excitons induces nonperturbative optical effects such as Rabi splitting and high-order sideband generation. Here, we investigated coherent properties of THz-induced sideband emissions from GaAs/AlGaAs multiquantum wells. With increasing THz electric field, optical susceptibility of the THz-dressed exciton shows a redshift with spectral broadening and extraordinary phase shift. This implies that the field ionization of the $1s$ exciton modifies th
Coherent manipulation of quasiparticles is a crucial method to realize ultrafast switching of the relating macroscopic order. In this paper, we studied coherent phonon generation under strong light field which allows one to induce nonperturbative nonlinear optical phenomena in solids. The efficiency of coherent phonon generation starts to saturate and deviate from the pronounced linear power dependence when the light intensity goes into the nonperturbative regime. It is clarified that the deviat
The formation phenomena of silver carbonate (Ag2CO3)–silver iodide (AgI) solid solutions were investigated by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis, and electrical conductivity measurement. Results revealed that AgI and Ag2CO3 reacted with each other when mixed at room temperature. The reaction products were classified into three types: (1) AgI-based solid solutions in the AgI-rich region for x = 10% or less in x Ag2CO3–(1 − x) AgI; (2) Ag2CO3-based solid solutions in
Td-WTe2 is a topologically nontrivial material and exhibits a variety of physical properties, such as giant unsaturated magnetoresistance and the unconventional thermoelectric effect, due to its topological nature. It is also known to exhibit ultrafast topological phase transitions that restore its inversion symmetry by intense terahertz and mid-infrared pulses, and these properties demonstrate the possibility of ultrafast control of devices based on topological properties. Recently, a novel pho

Under intense periodic driving by light, an electronic system is photon-dressed, leading to a strong modification of its energy structure depending on the light intensity. Such concept of photon-dressed states, in other words Floquet states, is considered as a promising way to manipulate material properties in ultrafast time scale [1]. So far, there have been many reports on characteristic energy structure changes of Floquet states in solids [2]–[4]. However, in real experiments, where ultrashor

The covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) is a powerful optimization method for continuous black-box optimization problems. Several noise-handling methods have been proposed to bring out the optimization performance of the CMA-ES on noisy objective functions. The adaptations of the population size and the learning rate are two major approaches that perform well under additive Gaussian noise. The reevaluation technique is another technique that evaluates each solution multiple
