15This retrospective cohort study examines the incidence of acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke after COVID-19 infection among vaccinated vs unvaccinated adults in Korea.
River blindness (onchocerciasis) causes severe itching, skin lesions, and vision impairment including blindness. More than 99% of all current cases are found in sub-Saharan Africa. Fortunately, vector control and community-directed treatment with ivermectin have significantly reduced morbidity. Studies in Mali and Senegal proved the feasibility of elimination with ivermectin administration. The treatment goal is shifting from control to elimination in endemic African regions. Given limited resou
As for the diseases for which the burden of disease is substantially increasing, it is needed to establish appropriate policies in a timely manner. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for prioritizing public health and health care policies in Korea.
Disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) estimates may vary according to factors such as the standard life expectancy, age weighting, time preference and discount rate, calculation of disability weights, and selection of the estimation method. DALY estimation methods are divided into the following 3 approaches: the incidence-based approach, the pure prevalence-based approach, and the hybrid approach. These 3 DALY estimation approaches each reflect different perspectives on the burden of disease usin
This is the background paper for the productivity extension of the World Bank’s Long-Term Growth Model (LTGM). Based on an extensive literature review, the paper identifies the main determinants of economic productivity as innovation, education, market efficiency, infrastructure, and institutions. Based on underlying proxies, the paper constructs indexes representing each of the main categories of productivity determinants and, combining them through principal component analysis, obtains an over
The hexapeptide WKYMVm, which is a strong formyl peptide receptor (FPR) 2 agonist, exhibits pro-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. However, its therapeutic efficacy in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has not been tested to date. Here, we investigated whether WKYMVm attenuates hyperoxia-induced lung inflammation and ensuing injuries by upregulating FPR2. The proliferation and tube formation ability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), along with the level
The prevalence of gastric cancer associated with Lynch syndrome (LS) is highly variable, and the underlying histologic pathway or molecular mechanisms remain unclear. From 1995 to 2012, 15 patients had been treated for both gastric and colonic adenocarcinomas and diagnosed as LS. In all cases, pathologic review, immunohistochemical analysis for mismatch-repair proteins, and microsatellite instability (MSI) tests were performed. To confirm LS, germline mutation tests and multiplex ligation-depend

Recently there has been a growing interest in three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems for drug discovery and development. These 3D culture systems better represent the in vivo cellular environment compared to two-dimensional (2D) cell culture, thereby providing more physiologically reliable information on drug screening and testing. Here we present the quantitative profiling of a drug-induced proteome in 2D- and 3D-cultured colorectal cancer SW480 cells using 2D nanoflow liquid chromatograph
An index that evaluates the health level of a population group considering both death and loss of function due to disease is called a summary measure of population health (SMPH). SMPHs are broadly divided into life year indices and life expectancy indices, the latter of which comprise healthy life expectancy (HLE). HLE is included as a policy target in various national and regional level healthcare plans, and the term "HLE" is commonly used in academia and by the public. However, the overall lev
We investigated whether thrombin preconditioning of human Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) improves paracrine potency and thus the therapeutic efficacy of naïve MSCs against severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Thrombin preconditioning significantly enhances the neuroprotective anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic, and anti-cytotoxic effects of naïve MSCs against oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) of cortical neurons in vitro. Severe HIE was induced in vivo using unilateral
Our results illustrate that COS promotes hair growth in vitro and in vivo by regulating the amount of growth factors and/or the activity of cellular responses through coordination of the WNT-β-catenin, hedgehog-Gli, and TGF-β1-Smad pathways.
Serum ferritin levels were significantly associated with major dyslipidemia parameters, more prominently in boys than in girls, and this association represents a cardiometabolic risk factor.
