Selective Exposure to Campaign Communication: The Role of Anticipated Agreement and Issue Public Membership

SJR Q1FWCI 19.4The Journal of Politics

This article explores two hypotheses about how voters encounter information during campaigns. According to the anticipated agreement hypothesis, people prefer to hear about candidates with whom they expect to agree. The “issue publics” hypothesis posits that voters choose to encounter information on issues they consider most important personally. We tested both hypotheses by distributing a multimedia CD offering extensive information about George W. Bush and Al Gore to a representative sample of

SJR Q1FWCI 8.9The Journal of Politics

Reports on the state of the horserace and analysis of the candidates' strategies are pervasive themes in news coverage of campaigns. Various explanations have been suggested for the dominance of strategy-oriented news over hard news. The most frequently identified factors are the length of the modern campaign, the built-in conflict between journalists and campaign operatives, and the pressures of the marketplace. This article provides a test of the market hypothesis. Given access to a wide varie

Employing a comparative experimental design drawing on over 18,000 interviews across eleven countries on four continents, this article revisits the discussion about the economic and cultural drivers of attitudes towards immigrants in advanced democracies. Experiments manipulate the occupational status, skin tone and national origin of immigrants in short vignettes. The results are most consistent with a Sociotropic Economic Threat thesis: In all countries, higher-skilled immigrants are preferred

Abstract We propose a context‐dependent approach to the study of political information. Combining a content analysis of broadcast news with a national survey measuring public awareness of various events, issues, and individuals in the news, we show that properties of national media systems influence both the supply of news and citizens’ awareness of events in the news. Public service‐oriented media systems deliver hard news more frequently than market‐based systems. It follows that for citizens

SJR Q1FWCI 13.2Communication Research

This study tests the hypothesis that cross-national differences in public awareness of international affairs are attributable to differences in the supply of international news and citizens' demand for information. Simultaneously, the authors compared the level of news coverage accorded specific “target” subjects in major Swiss and U.S. news organizations and the level of attentiveness to news among Swiss and U.S. citizens. The authors' results revealed that Swiss media provided more hard intern

Fragmentation in the Twitter Following of News Outlets

SJR Q1FWCI 9.9Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly

In recent years, Twitter emerged as an important news driver as most major news organizations now provide newsfeeds via Twitter. We classified 34 South Korean news outlets based on the pattern of co-following among 709,586 Twitter users. We also had a rare opportunity to match their following behavior with individual-level attributes by relying on supplementary survey data on 1,811 members of an online survey panel. Our results reveal that partisan and generational selectivity sharply polarizes

Who Deserves Citizenship? An Experimental Study of Japanese Attitudes Toward Immigrant Workers
Tetsuro Kobayashi, Christian Collet, Shanto Iyengar, Kyu S. Hahn
SJR Q3FWCI 4.2Social Science Japan JournalOA

Citizenship eligibility has emerged as a salient issue in Japan as population diversity has increased and the political system has aligned around debates over regional security and tabunka kyōsei (‘multicultural co-existence’). A predominantly Western literature suggests that sentiments toward immigrants are driven by economic self-interest and/or cultural identity. Such approaches, we argue, privilege groups as units of analysis when it is the personal attributes of immigrants that have a beari

Deliberative Distortions? Homogenization, Polarization, and Domination in Small Group Discussions

SJR Q1FWCI 8.7British Journal of Political ScienceOA

Abstract Deliberation is widely believed to enhance democracy by helping to refine the ‘public will’, moving its participants' policy attitudes closer to their ‘full-consideration’ policy attitudes – those they would hypothetically hold with unlimited information, to which they gave unlimited reflection. Yet there have also been claims that the social dynamics involved generally ‘homogenize’ attitudes (decreasing their variance), ‘polarize’ them (moving their means toward the nearer extreme), or

Natural Disasters in Black and White: How Racial Cues Influenced Public Response to Hurricane Katrina
Shanto Iyengar, Kyu S. Hahn
FWCI 10.2

This paper extends findings on implicit racial bias to public opinion concerning natural disasters. Using an online experiment, we show that racial cues embedded in news coverage of Hurricane Katrina influenced public support for governmental disaster assistance. First, exposure to a white rather than African-American hurricane victim made participants more likely to cite the federal government than private relief organizations or individual victims as the appropriate source of assistance. Online social media such as Twitter are widely used for mining public opinions and sentiments on various issues and topics. The sheer volume of the data generated and the eager adoption by the online-savvy public are helping to raise the profile of online media as a convenient source of news and public opinions on social and political issues as well. Due to the uncontrollable biases in the population who heavily use the media, however, it is often difficult to measure how accurately the online s

The Influence of “Social Viewing” on Televised Debate Viewers’ Political Judgment

SJR Q1FWCI 1.3Political Communication

Social media could serve as an easy and fast window to the climate of public opinion. In the current study, we examined the influence of perceived opinion climate revealed via Twitter postings in shaping televised debate viewers’ candidate evaluation. We conducted two Web-based experiments in the high- and low-stimulus elections: (a) the 2012 Korean presidential election and (b) the 2014 Seoul mayoral election. Instead of using contrived stimulus materials, we were able to examine the influence

Partisan selective following on twitter over time: polarization or depolarization?
Hyelim Lee, Kyu S. Hahn
SJR Q1FWCI 0.4Asian Journal of Communication

In this study, we track the severity of partisan polarization in the following of legislators on Twitter during the initial two years of Twitter's introduction to South Korea. We examine the pattern of co-following among Twitter users following members of the 18th Korean National Assembly at three time points. We collected a complete list of all followers for each legislator and constructed their co-following network. We also supplemented our following data with survey data. This allowed us to m
