South Korea under Compressed Modernity
Kyung‐Sup Chang
FWCI 13.3

The condensed social change and complex social order governing South Koreans’ life cannot be satisfactorily delineated by relying on West-derived social theories or culturalist arguments. Nor can various globally eye-catching traits of this society in industrial work, education, popular culture, and a host of other areas be analyzed without developing innovative conceptual tools and theoretical frameworks designed to tackle the South Korean uniqueness directly. This book provides a fascinating a

Kyung‐Sup Chang
SJR Q1FWCI 12.5Citizenship Studies

The purpose of this article is to analyze the complex relationships among economic development, democracy, and citizenship as they have been manifested in the South Korean context since the late 1980s. It begins by examining the structural relationship between economic development and political democratization in South Korea with an analytical focus on the substantive function of democratic politics in delivering various citizenship rights. The Neo-Confucian right and family politics in South Korea: The nuclear family as an ideological construct
Kyung‐Sup Chang
SJR Q1FWCI 8.1Economy and Society

In previous issues of Economy and Society, Somerville and Durham debated the moralization of neo-liberal family policy. The conservative politics of the family has been moralized not only in Anglo-American societies but also in South Korea. From a neo-Confucian perspective, many conservative politicians and even scholars have found a convenient scapegoat in the nuclear family as the main cause of many recent social problems, in particular, widespread poverty and psychological difficulties among

The peasant family in the transition from Maoist to Lewisian rural industrialisation
Kyung‐Sup Chang
SJR Q1FWCI 8.7The Journal of Development Studies

Rural industrialisation in China in the post‐Maoist era involves the social transformation of the peasant population into a new class, which is partially detached from agriculture and employed in diverse non‐state enterprises ranging from family‐run businesses to village and township‐run enterprises. The peasant family internalises this transformation, as it reallocates labour and capital into new industrial and tertiary sectors while maintaining agricultural production as a first and last means

China's rural reform: the state and peasantry in constructing a macro-rationality
Kyung‐Sup Chang
SJR Q1FWCI 9.2Economy and Society

As a critique of the popular perspective on China's rural reform centered on microinstitutional problems of collective farming such as work incentive and monitoring, this paper places an alternative emphasis on the distinct organizational characteristics of the peasant family in production, distribution, and welfare. What the Chinese state saw in family-based peasantry was not a typical market-oriented private economy operating mainly in pursuit of short term profits, but a multipurpose, morally

ASIANPERSPECTIVE, Vol. 17, No. 3, Spring-Summer 1993, pp. 169-200 THE CONFUCIAN FAMILY INSTEAD OF THE WELFARE STATE? REFORM AND PEASANT WELFARE IN POST-MAO CHINA* Kyung-Sup Chang Post-Mao China's rural reform has been primarily con ceived, both by Chinese leaders and scholarly observers, as a transformation of the rural production systems. However, there is another, no less consequential aspect of the ongoing changes in peasant life—namely, the demise of the collective welfare sys tems. The pr
