This contribution explores the relation between molecular second hyperpolarizabilities (gamma) and molecular architecture in phenylacetylene dendrimers using the semiempirical molecular orbital method, that is, INDO/S method. The orientationally averaged gamma of a large-size phenylacetylene dendrimer, which is composed of 24 units of phenylacetylenes and is referred to as D25, is found to be about 50 times as large as that of the diphenylacetylene monomer. In contrast, the gamma(s)() value of D
The dependence of the second hyperpolarizability (gamma) on the diradical character (y) for singlet diradical systems is investigated using a model compound, the p-quinodimethane (PQM) molecule with different both-end carbon-carbon (C-C) bond lengths, by several ab initio molecular orbital and density functional theory methods. The diradical character based on UHF calculations indicates that at equilibrium geometry PQM is in a singlet ground state and primarily exhibits a quinoid structure, wher
Although most third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are closed-shell singlet systems, this Letter theoretically shows that the third-order NLO properties are drastically enhanced in symmetric open-shell diradical systems with intermediate diradical character and further reveals that this enhancement is associated with the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. This new paradigm opens up a promising area for designing new third-order NLO materials.
Various size-consistent approaches to the calculation of molecular hyperpolarizabilities are analyzed based on the double perturbation theory. General equations for the nth-order response property with respect to an external time-independent field are derived on the basis of the Rayleigh–Schrödinger perturbation theory (RSPT) and the coupled-cluster (CC) theory. The corresponding equations for the time-dependent case are also derived by the CC formalism, which is referred to as the time-dependen
Open-shell character, e. g., diradical character, is a quantum chemically well-defined quantity in ground-state molecular systems, which is not an observable but can quantify the degree of effective bond weakness in the chemical sense or electron correlation strength in the physical sense. Because this quantity also correlates to specific excited states, physicochemical properties concerned with those states are expected to strongly correlate to the open-shell character. This feature enables us
Design principles toward open-shell singlet molecular systems exhibiting remarkable nonlinear optical (NLO) responses are derived based on a two-site diradical model within the valence configuration interaction scheme. In this scheme, the concept of diradical character (y), a chemical index for bond weakness in the ground state, enables to classify singlet molecular systems into three categories: (i) closed-shell (y = 0), (ii) intermediate diradical (0 < y < 1), and (iii) pure open-shell (
We report a novel type of organic-inorganic hybrid material with rare two-dimensional nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with the finite-field (FF) method show that the designed molecules (6,9 organo-derivatives of B10H14) could carry the characteristic NLO properties of both organic and inorganic materials. Interestingly, due to their unique V-shaped structures, they have large off-diagonal first hyperpolarizability tensors or nonlinear
Switching on an external electric field (F) along the electron correlation direction produces a giant enhancement of the second hyperpolarizability γ in a polyaromatic diradicaloid having intermediate diradical character. This has been evidenced by carrying out spin-unrestricted density functional theory calculations with the LC-UBLYP long-range corrected exchange-correlation functional for the s-indaceno[1,2,3-cd;5,6,7-c′d′]diphenalene (IDPL) diradical compound in comparison to a closed-shell a
The second hyperpolarizabilities of bisimidazole- and bistriazole-benzene compounds have been calculated at different levels of approximation to unravel the effects of diradical character as well as of charge and spin multiplicity. The largest second hyperpolarizabilities are associated with intermediate diradical character, provided positive charging does not compensate for this effect. For the neutral diradical bisimidazole compound, the singlet diradical species possesses a second hyperpolari
Carbon atoms have the potential to produce a variety of fascinating all-carbon structures with amazing electronic and mechanical properties. Over the last few decades, several efforts have been made using experimental and computational techniques to functionalize graphene, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes for potential use in modern hi-tech electronic, medicinal, optical and nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Since photons replaced electrons as a carrier of information, the field of NLO materi
