In this case series study, inapparent infections in children may have been associated with silent COVID-19 transmission in the community. Heightened surveillance using laboratory screening will allow detection in children with unrecognized SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Along with positive SARS-CoV-2 RNA in nasopharyngeal swabs, viral RNA was detectable at high concentration for >3 weeks in fecal samples from 12 mildly symptomatic and asymptomatic children with COVID-19 in Seoul, South Korea. Saliva also tested positive during the early phase of infection. If proven infectious, feces and saliva could serve as transmission sources.

The large outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that started in Wuhan, China has now spread to many countries worldwide. Current epidemiologic knowledge suggests that relatively few cases are seen among children, which limits opportunities to address pediatric specific issues on infection control and the children's contribution to viral spread in the community. Here, we report the first pediatric case of COVID-19 in Korea. The 10-year-old girl was a close contact of her uncle and her m

We report changes in viral load over time in a 27-day-old neonate with coronavirus disease 2019 who presented with fever, cough, and vomiting. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 RNA was detected in the nasopharynx, oropharynx, stool, saliva, plasma, and urine. The highest viral RNA copies in nasopharynx decreased over time while viral load in stool remained high.

In areas with high prevalence of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MRMP) pneumonia, treatment in children has become challenging. This study aimed to analyze the efficacy of macrolides and doxycycline with regard to the presence of macrolide resistance. We analyzed children with MP pneumonia during the two recent epidemics of 2014-2015 and 2019-2020 from four hospitals in Korea. Nasopharyngeal samples were obtained from children with pneumonia for MP cultures and polymerase chain

This study aimed to determine the mechanism of resistance to piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) in Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream isolates that are susceptible to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs). Antibiotic susceptibility was determined for K. pneumoniae isolated from children with bacteremia. The β-lactamase genes were detected using a large-scale bla detection method (LARGE-SCALEblaFinder) and confirmed by sequencing analysis. The isolates were furt

This study investigated the roles of β-lactamase and penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3) alterations in the development of recent antimicrobial resistance in nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) isolated from Korean children. Nasopharyngeal NTHi isolates from children at a tertiary children's hospital were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility using E-test. β-lactamase production was screened by the paper disc test, and polymerase chain reaction amplification of blaTEM<
