Incorporating reversible sacrificial bonds in network polymers not only toughens these materials but also endows them with self‐recoverability. However, self‐recoverability is only realized for dispersed energy less than 10 MJ m −3 . It remains a challenge to achieve simultaneous high stretchability, toughness, and recoverability. Here, inspired by the structure of mussel byssus cuticles, a new design strategy is proposed and demonstrated to improve both the toughness and self‐recoverability of

A strategy of utilizing atmospheric moisture for self-healing polymers is investigated.
Abstract Compatibility of a crystalline/crystalline polymer blend, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), was studied by high‐resolution solid‐state 13 C‐NMR spectroscopy. The 1 H T 1 measurement demonstrated that both the compatibility and the domain size depend on the composition of the blend. The PVA/PHB blend is compatible only when the blend contains a large amount of PVA. The domain sizes of the compatible blend are less than 200 Å. In the pulse saturation transfer (PST)
The incorporation of weak and reversible dynamic bonds is a key strategy for enhancing the mechanical properties of polymers. However, the quantitative relationship between the molecular characteristics of dynamic bonds and the resultant macroscopic mechanical properties has not been elucidated fully. Here, we systematically investigated the effect of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) on the mechanical properties of polymer networks. Three types of H-bonding groups were homogeneously introduced into iden
The structure of the isomorphous crystals of P(HB-co-HV) in the PHB crystalline lattice is examined in detail, and a structural transition at ca. 10 mol % HV is found for the first time. By analyzing a series of P(HB-co-HV) samples prepared by the same treatment, the effect of the thermal history was removed from the results, and the composition dependence of the crystal formation and of the resultant crystalline structure was highlighted. The crystallinity, unit cell dimensions, and lamella thi
A non-swellable and highly self-healable polymer in seawater is obtained. Dynamic crosslinking of catechol-based polymers with p-phenyldiboronic acid through non-ionic boronate ester bonds is the key to realizing these two properties simultaneously.
The change in the surface structure of poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] [PHB] films upon the enzymatic hydrolysis was analyzed by attenuated total reflection infrared [ATR/IR] spectrometry. As enzymes, PHB depolymerases isolated from Ralstonia pickettii T1 and Pseudomonas stutzeri were used. By curve decomposition of the carbonyl stretching band of ATR/IR spectra, the change in the surface crystallinity of PHB films by exposure to buffer containing 0, 1, and 4 microg of PHB depolymerases was estimate
