Time-related BP variability in the first 24 hours following successful ERT was more correlated with sICH than other absolute BP levels. This suggests that maintaining a stable BP may be an important factor in preventing sICH after successful ERT. Ann Neurol 2019;85:574-581.

P(bt)O(2) monitoring can be used to identify CPP targets for optimal brain tissue oxygenation. In patients who do not undergo multimodality monitoring, maintaining CPP >80 mm Hg may reduce the risk of BTH.

Perioperative stroke: pathophysiology and management
Sang‐Bae Ko
SJR Q1FWCI 4.2Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

Although perioperative stroke is uncommon during low-risk non-vascular surgery, if it occurs, it can negatively impact recovery from the surgery and functional outcome. Based on the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Consensus Statement, perioperative stroke includes intraoperative stroke, as well as postoperative stroke developing within 30 days after surgery. Factors related to perioperative stroke include age, sex, a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack, ca

Senolytic Therapy for Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

SJR Q1FWCI 4.5International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death, and even timely treatment can result in severe disabilities. Reperfusion of the ischemic stroke region and restoration of the blood supply often lead to a series of cellular and biochemical consequences, including generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), expression of inflammatory cytokines, inflammation, and cerebral cell damage, which is collectively called cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Since ROS and inflammatory cytokines

Endovascular recanalization therapy (ERT) has been a standard of care for patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large artery occlusion (LAO) within 6 hours after onset, since five landmark ERT trials conducted by 2015 demonstrated its clinical benefit. Recently, two randomized clinical trials demonstrated that ERT, even in the late time window of up to 16 hours or 24 hours after last known normal time, improved the outcome of patients who had a target mismatch, defined as either clinical-co

Multimodality Monitoring in the Neurointensive Care Unit: A Special Perspective for Patients with Stroke
Sang‐Bae Ko
SJR Q1FWCI 1.8Journal of StrokeOA

Multimodality monitoring (MMM) is a recently developed method that aids in understanding real-time brain physiology. Early detection of physiological disturbances is possible with the help of MMM, which allows identification of underlying causes of deterioration and minimization of secondary brain injury (SBI). MMM is especially helpful in comatose patients with severe brain injury because neurological examinations are not sensitive enough to detect SBI. The variables frequently examined in MMM

Mechanisms of Functional Recovery after Stroke
Sang‐Bae Ko, Byung‐Woo Yoon
SJR Q1FWCI 5.8Monographs in clinical neuroscience/Frontiers of neurology and neuroscience/Monographs in neural sciencesOA

Stroke is a leading cause of disability. After initial stabilization, neurologic recovery takes place even in the acute phase. Well-known recovery mechanisms from stroke deficits are improvement from diaschisis, or functional reorganization of the ipsilesional or contralesional cortex with involvement of uncrossed corticospinal tract fibers. The importance of coactivation of the perilesional or contralesional cortex is unknown; however, neuronal plasticity plays an important role in neurologic r

A Case of Multiple Brain Infarctions Associated With Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Endocarditis
Sang‐Bae Ko, Dong‐Eog Kim, Hyung‐Min Kwon, Jae‐Kyu Roh
FWCI 0.2Archives of Neurology

A 63-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of fever and altered mentality. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple infarctions at the basal ganglia, cerebellum, and subcortical white matter with petechial hemorrhage, which was more easily seen on gradient echo images. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was cultured from her blood, and echocardiography showed septic vegetations in the mitral valve. She recovered fully after 6 weeks of appropriate antibiotic treatment.

Morphine-Sensitive Paroxysmal Sympathetic Storm in Pontine Intracerebral Hemorrhage

SJR Q3FWCI 0.4The Neurologist

Paroxysmal sympathetic storm (PSS) is a rare complication of severe traumatic brain injury or cerebrovascular disease. Various medications have been tried in patients with PSS, but the clinical responses of the patients were variable. We report a classic case of PSS after spontaneous pontine hemorrhage in which the patient's fluctuating blood pressure and body temperature were dramatically stabilized using morphine.
