Large-Scale Genomics Reveals the Genetic Characteristics of Seven Species and Importance of Phylogenetic Distance for Estimating Pan-Genome Size

SJR Q1FWCI 2.8Frontiers in MicrobiologyOA

For more than a decade, pan-genome analysis has been applied as an effective method for explaining the genetic contents variation of prokaryotic species. However, genomic characteristics and detailed structures of gene pools have not been fully clarified, because most studies have used a small number of genomes. Here, we constructed pan-genomes of seven species in order to elucidate variations in the genetic contents of >27,000 genomes belonging to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococ

Senescent Phenotype Can Be Reversed by Reduction of Caveolin Status
Kyung A. Cho, Sung Jin Ryu, Jeong‐Soo Park, Ik‐Soon Jang, Jeong Soo Ahn, Kyung Tae Kim, Sang Chul Park
SJR Q1FWCI 3.8Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

Hyporesponsiveness to growth factors is one of the fundamental characteristics of senescent cells. We previously reported that the up-regulation of caveolin attenuates the growth factor response and the subsequent downstream signal cascades in senescent human diploid fibroblasts. Therefore, in the present experiment, we investigated the modulation of caveolin status in senescent cells to determine the effect of caveolin on mitogenic signaling efficiency and cell cycling. We reduced the level of

Evaluation of 16S rRNA Databases for Taxonomic Assignments Using a Mock Community
Sang‐Cheol Park, Sungho Won
SJR Q2FWCI 3.9Genomics & InformaticsOA

Taxonomy identification is fundamental to all microbiology studies. Particularly in metagenomics, which identify the composition of microorganisms using thousands of sequences, its importance is even greater. Identification is inevitably affected by the choice of database. This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of three widely used 16S databases, Greengenes, Silva, and EzBioCloud, and to suggest basic guidelines for selecting reference databases. Using public mock community data, each

Chemical screening identifies ROCK as a target for recovering mitochondrial function in Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome
Hyun Tae Kang, Joon Tae Park, Kobong Choi, Hyo Jei Claudia Choi, Chul Won Jung, Gyu Ree Kim, Young‐Sam Lee, Sang Chul Park
SJR Q1FWCI 3.5Aging CellOA

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) constitutes a genetic disease wherein an aging phenotype manifests in childhood. Recent studies indicate that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play important roles in HGPS phenotype progression. Thus, pharmacological reduction in ROS levels has been proposed as a potentially effective treatment for patient with this disorder. In this study, we performed high-throughput screening to find compounds that could reduce ROS levels in HGPS fibroblasts and identi

SJR Q1FWCI 8.9AntioxidantsOA

Mitochondria are one of the organelles undergoing rapid alteration during the senescence process. Senescent cells show an increase in mitochondrial size, which is attributed to the accumulation of defective mitochondria, which causes mitochondrial oxidative stress. Defective mitochondria are also targets of mitochondrial oxidative stress, and the vicious cycle between defective mitochondria and mitochondrial oxidative stress contributes to the onset and development of aging and age-related disea

SJR Q1FWCI 2.4CellsOA

Mitochondria are one of organelles that undergo significant changes associated with senescence. An increase in mitochondrial size is observed in senescent cells, and this increase is ascribed to the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria that generate excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). Such dysfunctional mitochondria are prime targets for ROS-induced damage, which leads to the deterioration of oxidative phosphorylation and increased dependence on glycolysis as an energy source. Based o

Ultrasound‐stimulated peripheral nerve regeneration within asymmetrically porous PLGA/Pluronic F127 nerve guide conduit
Sang Chul Park, Se Heang Oh, Tae Beom Seo, Uk Namgung, Jin‐Man Kim, Jin Ho Lee
SJR Q2FWCI 0.8Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B Applied Biomaterials

Recently, we developed a novel method to fabricate a nerve guide conduit (NGC) with asymmetrical pore structure and hydrophilicity using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and Pluronic F127 by a modified immersion precipitation method. From the animal study using a rat model (sciatic nerve defect of rat), we recognized that the unique PLGA/Pluronic F127 tube provided good environments for nerve regeneration. In this study, we applied low-intensity pulsed ultrasound as a simple and noninvasive
