Professor Sarah S. Park's research lab specializes in the design, synthesis, and functional characterization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with tailored electronic, ionic, and transport properties. The lab focuses on creating conductive and porous MOFs for applications in energy storage, solid-state ionics, and electrochemical sensing, with a particular emphasis on understanding structure-function relationships at the molecular level. Key research directions include the development of single-ion conductors, proton conductors with distinct transport pathways, and redox-active MOFs for supercapacitor applications.

Isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) M2(TTFTB) (M = Mn, Co, Zn, and Cd; H4TTFTB = tetrathiafulvalene tetrabenzoate) exhibit a striking correlation between their single-crystal conductivities and the shortest S···S interaction defined by neighboring TTF cores, which inversely correlates with the ionic radius of the metal ions. The larger cations cause a pinching of the S···S contact, which is responsible for better orbital overlap between pz orbitals on neighboring S and C atoms. Density
A novel Cu(II)-azolate metal-organic framework (MOF) with tubular pores undergoes a reversible single crystal to single crystal transition between neutral and anionic phases upon reaction with stoichiometric amounts of halide or pseudohalide salts. The stoichiometric transformation between the two phases allows loading of record amounts of charge-balancing Li+, Na+, and Mg2+ ions for MOFs. Whereas the halide/pseudohalide anions are bound to the metal centers and
An amperometric dual NO/CO microsensor was developed on the basis of a working electrode incorporating dual Pt microdisks (each diameter, 76 μm) and a Ag/AgCl reference electrode covered with a gas permeable membrane. One of the Pt disks was sequentially electrodeposited with Pt and Sn; the other Pt disk was deposited with Pt-Fe(III) oxide nanocomposites. The first showed activity for the oxidation of both NO and CO; the second showed activity only for NO oxidation. In the copresence of NO and C
The structure-directing role of the inorganic secondary building unit (SBU) is key for determining the topology of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Here we show that organic building units relying on strong π interactions that are energetically competitive with the formation of common inorganic SBUs can also play a role in defining the topology. We demonstrate the importance of the organic SBU in the formation of Mg2H6(H3O)(TTFTB)3 (MIT-25), a mesoporo
The mechanism of proton conductivity in porous solids (i.e., Grotthuss or vehicular) is related to the structure and chemical environment of the pores. Direct observation of structure-function relationships is difficult because state-of-the-art solid proton conductors are often amorphous. Here, we present a systematic elucidation of two distinct proton transport pathways within MIT-25, a mesoporous metal-organic framework that exhibits parallel channels of ∼27 Å and ∼4.5 Å width. We characterize
Two-dimensional (2D) electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as viable candidates for active electrode materials in supercapacitors due to their high electrical conductivity, high specific surface area, and intrinsic redox-active sites. Despite their promising electrochemical performance, their pseudocapacitive behavior via fast and reversible charge transfer reactions remains yet to be fully exploited. Here, we investigate the electrochemical energy storage mechanis
Under an applied magnetic field, superparamagnetic Fe3 O4 nanoparticles with complementary DNA strands assemble into crystalline, pseudo-1D elongated superlattice structures. The assembly process is driven through a combination of DNA hybridization and particle dipolar coupling, a property dependent on particle composition, size, and interparticle distance. The DNA controls interparticle distance and crystal symmetry, while the magnetic field leads to anisotropic crystal gr
ConspectusRecent years have witnessed significant interest in two-dimensional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their unique properties and promising applications across various fields. These materials offer distinct advantages, including high porosity and excellent charge transport properties. Their tunability allows precise control over various factors, including the electronic structure adjustments and local reactivity modulation, facilitating a wide range of properties and applications,
This paper reports a real-time study of the codynamical changes in the release of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) and oxygen (O(2)) consumption in a rat neocortex in vivo upon electrical stimulation using an amperometric NO/O(2) dual microsensor. Electrical stimulation induced transient cerebral hypoxia due to the increased metabolic demands that were not met by the blood volume inside the stimulated cortical region. A NO/O(2) dual microsensor was successfully used to monitor the pair of real-time
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline extended structures featuring permanent porosity, assembled from metal ions and organic ligands, often synthesized by the solvothermal method (50-260 °C, 12-72 h). Here, an alternative synthetic approach-solvent-induced structural rearrangement in ultrasound-assisted synthesis is presented. Six representative Zn-based MOFs, each composed of distinct secondary building units, are synthesized within 2-180 min consuming less solvent (>0.03 m) at room
The atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have attracted significant attention due to their superatomic behavior originating from the quantum confinement effect. This behavior makes these materials suitable for various photoluminescence-based applications, including chemical sensing, bioimaging, and phototherapy, owing to their intriguing optical properties. Especially, the manipulation of inter- or intracluster interaction through cluster-assembled materials (CAMs) presents significant pa
The development of conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a unique challenge in materials chemistry because it is unclear how to dope them. Here, we demonstrate that the inclusion of pendant amines on hexahydroxytriphenylene linkages results in two-dimensional (2D) polycrystalline frameworks Cu3(HHTATP)2, isostructural to its Cu3(HHTP)2 parent, and exhibits the highest electrical conductivity of 1.21 S/cm among 2D MOFs featuring CuO4<
While covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been extensively investigated in the field of organic electrolyte materials, there is potential for further enhancement of their room-temperature ionic conductivity. This study introduces a novel methodology to induce self-exfoliation in the parent COF during synthesis through a postmodification technique. This process yields covalent organic nanosheets that feature pyridinium sulfobetaine groups, referred to as PS-CON. Due to the strategic arrangeme
