15These data support the possibility that a defect in diaphragm thickening is related to acute exacerbation of COPD.
Although low serum bicarbonate level is known to be associated with adverse outcomes in patients with chronic kidney injury, it is unclear whether low serum bicarbonate level is associated with the development of acute kidney injury (AKI). The purpose of our study was to determine whether serum bicarbonate levels at admission could be a risk factor for AKI development and mortality in hospitalised patients. We retrospectively enrolled 17,320 adult patients who were admitted to the academic teach
This study found that dexmedetomidine was associated with decreased risk of NOAF in patients with critical illness, suggesting that it may be necessary and warranted to evaluate this association in future clinical trials.
Acute or chronic dysfunction of the heart or kidneys can cause dysfunction of other organs. This interaction between the heart and kidneys is characterized as cardiorenal syndrome (CRS). Recently, a preponderance of data indicated that venous congestion plays an important role in the combination of renal and cardiac diseases. This review aims to focus on the pathophysiology of venous congestion that leads to renal impairment in heart failure and the use of diuretics or ultrafiltration as deconge
Abstract The incidence of pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection is high in patients with underlying lung disease such as bronchiectasis. Although previous studies have reported many risk factors contributing to the development of NTM-lung disease (LD), only a few reports on the relationship of the characteristics of patients, such as body mass index (BMI), skeletal mass, and fat mass, with NTM-LD have been published. We aimed to investigate the association between these paramete
Malnutrition in critically ill patients is closely linked with clinical outcomes. During acute inflammatory states, nutrition cannot reverse the loss of body cell mass completely. Studies on nutritional screening and strategy considering metabolic changes have not yet been conducted. We aimed to identify nutrition strategies using the modified Nutrition Risk in the Critically ill (mNUTIRC) score. Nutrition support data, laboratory nutrition indicators, and prognosis indices were prospectively co
Low skeletal muscle mass was independently associated with the development of dipstick albuminuria after 4 years in Korean adults without CKD. Further research is needed to verify the role of low muscle mass in the development of albuminuria and renal injury.
The SI, DSI, MSI, and Age-SI at ICU admission were significantly associated with in-hospital mortality in patients with septic shock and normal LVEF, which was not found in those with decreased LVEF. Our study emphasizes the importance of interpreting shock indices in the context of LV function in septic shock.
Regardless of the cannula configuration, patients with ARDS managed with VV-ECMO showed comparable clinical outcomes in terms of short-term oxygenation and long-term mortality. Nevertheless, further well-designed randomized control trials are warranted.
This retrospective study showed that transverse skin incisions in PTs for critically ill patients, resulted in a significant decrease in overall complications, particularly ulcers in the tracheostomy site.
The effects of a 12-week treatment with the two ARBs, telmisartan and valsartan, on cardiovascular, metabolic, and inflammatory parameters were not different in patients with uncomplicated hypertension.
Taken together, reduced nephron mass have a negative effect on the repair process that is partially mediated by the disruption of the cell cycle regulation.
ML prediction models outperformed previous mortality risk models. This model may be used to identify patients who are unlikely to benefit from VV-ECMO therapy during patient selection.
Low-tidal-volume ventilation decreases mortality in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients. This study investigated the effects of ultralow tidal ventilation under veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO) support in pigs with ARDS. Eight pigs were intubated and inoculated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus through bronchoscopy. Ultralow tidal ventilation (3 mL/kg) under extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO) support was applied to one group and h
Purpose: As a recipient vessel, internal mammary vessels have many advantages for microvascular reconstruction of the breast. But the approach is time consuming and results in large morbidities. However, the perforating branches of the internal mammary vessels can be used to minimize such demerits. The purpose of this cadaver study is to clarify the location and diameter of the perforating branches of internal mammary vessels and to prove that they are safe and reliable recipient vessels.
