Pneumococcal Lipoteichoic Acid (LTA) Is Not as Potent as Staphylococcal LTA in Stimulating Toll-Like Receptor 2
Seung Hyun Han, Je Hak Kim, Michael Martin, Suzanne M. Michalek, Moon H. Nahm
SJR Q1FWCI 2.5Infection and ImmunityOA

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of gram-positive sepsis, and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) may be important in causing gram-positive bacterial septic shock. Even though pneumococcal LTA is structurally distinct from the LTA of other gram-positive bacteria, the immunological properties of pneumococcal LTA have not been well characterized. We have investigated the ability of LTAs to stimulate human monocytes by using highly pure and structurally intact preparations of pneumococcal LTA and it

Intensifying air pollution has engendered growing public health concerns due to its broad and adverse effects on humanity. As a result, the development of air filtration technologies has received increased attention as a practical and promising solution. Till now, many efforts have sought to advance air filtration technologies to overcome the trade-off relationship between filtration efficiency and pressure drop. This review discusses recent progress in air filtration technology with respect to

Lipoteichoic Acid of Probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum Attenuates Poly I:C-Induced IL-8 Production in Porcine Intestinal Epithelial Cells

Probiotics in livestock feed supplements are considered a replacement for antibiotics that enhance gastrointestinal immunity. Although bacterial cell wall components have been proposed to be associated with probiotic function, little evidence demonstrates that they are responsible for probiotic functions in livestock. The present study demonstrated that lipoteichoic acid (LTA) of Lactobacillus plantarum (Lp.LTA) confers anti-inflammatory responses in porcine intestinal epithelial cell lin

SJR Q1FWCI 7.5PLoS ONEOA

Dental caries is a biofilm-dependent oral disease and Streptococcus mutans is the known primary etiologic agent of dental caries that initiates biofilm formation on tooth surfaces. Although some Lactobacillus strains inhibit biofilm formation of oral pathogenic bacteria, the molecular mechanisms by which lactobacilli inhibit bacterial biofilm formation are not clearly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that Lactobacillus plantarum lipoteichoic acid (Lp.LTA) inhibited the biofilm formatio

Bacterial infection can cause inflammatory bone diseases accompanied by the bone destruction resulting from excess generation of osteoclasts. Although lipoproteins are one of the major immunostimulating components of bacteria, little is known about their effects on bone metabolism. In this study, we investigated the role of lipoproteins in bacteria-induced bone destruction using Staphylococcus aureus wild type, its lipoprotein-deficient mutant, and synthetic lipopeptides Pam2CSK4 and Pam3CSK4 kn

Streptococcus gordonii, a Gram-positive bacterium, is a commensal bacterium that is commonly found in the skin, oral cavity, and intestine. It is also known as an opportunistic pathogen that can cause local or systemic diseases, such as apical periodontitis and infective endocarditis. S. gordonii, an early colonizer, easily attaches to host tissues, including tooth surfaces and heart valves, forming biofilms. S. gordonii penetrates into root canals and blood streams, subsequ

Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium frequently found in the gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, and periodontal tissue. Although it is considered a commensal, it can cause bacteremia, endocarditis, endodontic infections, and urinary tract infections. Because antibiotics are cytotoxic not only to pathogens, but also to health-beneficial commensals, phage therapy has emerged as an alternative strategy to specifically control pathogenic bacteria with mi

SJR Q1FWCI 3.1Frontiers in MicrobiologyOA

A biofilm is an aggregate of microorganisms in which cells adhere to biological or non-biological surfaces and is responsible for various infectious diseases. Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including pneumonia, endocarditis, and osteomyelitis, are often associated with colonization and biofilm formation. Although lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is involved in biofilm formation, the specific role of LTA is not clearly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that LTA released from <

SJR Q1FWCI 2.4Molecular Oral Microbiology

Streptococcus mutans is a representative oral pathogen that causes dental caries and pulpal inflammation. Its lipoteichoic acid (Sm.LTA) is known to be an important cell-wall virulence factor involved in bacterial adhesion and induction of inflammation. Since Sm.LTA-binding proteins (Sm.LTA-BPs) might play an important role in pathogenesis and host immunity, we identified the Sm.LTA-BPs in the saliva of caries-free and caries-positive human subjects using Sm.LTA-conjugated beads and LTQ-Orbitrap
