East Asian countries experience severe air pollution owing to their rapid development and urbanization induced by substantial economic activities. South Korea and China are among the most polluted East Asian countries with high mass concentrations of PM2.5. Although the occurrence of transboundary air pollution among neighboring countries has been recognized for a long time, studies involving simultaneous ground-based PM2.5 monitoring and source apportionment in South Korea

Comparison of Dry Deposition Predicted from Models and Measured with a Water Surface Sampler

SJR Q1FWCI 5.1Environmental Science & Technology

Atmospheric deposition, which is commonly classified as either dry or wet, has received a great deal of study over the past decade due to concerns about the effect of deposited material on the environment. Atmospheric deposi tion is an important mechanism controlling the fate of airborne toxics and their transfer from the atmosphere to natural surfaces. In this study, a circular water surface sampler was developed to measure the dry deposition flux of atmospheric gases and particles. The sampler

Our analysis of AGA and the prevalence of MetS in a large population-based cohort demonstrated quite different findings compared with previous reports. The different results according to gender suggest that there may be different mechanisms that are yet to be defined between male and female AGA.

Dry Deposition Fluxes and Size Distributions of Heavy Metals in Seoul, Korea During Yellow-Sand Events
Seung‐Muk Yi, Eun-Young Lee, Thomas M. Holsen
SJR Q2FWCI 5.3Aerosol Science and Technology

Mass and elemental dry deposition fluxes and ambient particle size distributions were measured using dry deposition plates and a cascade impactor from March to November 1998 in Seoul, Korea. During the spring sampling period several yellow-sand events characterized by long-range transport from China and Mongolia impacted the area. During these events the mass fluxes were statistically the same as during springtime nonyellow-sand events. However, most elemental fluxes were higher. In general, the

Atmospheric speciated mercury concentrations on an island between China and Korea: sources and transport pathways

Abstract. As a global pollutant, mercury (Hg) is of particular concern in East Asia, where anthropogenic emissions are the largest. In this study, speciated Hg concentrations were measured on Yongheung Island, the westernmost island in Korea, located between China and the Korean mainland to identify the importance of local and regional Hg sources. Various tools including correlations with other pollutants, conditional probability function, and back-trajectory-based analysis consistently indicate

This study examined the association between all-cause/cardiovascular mortality and PM(2.5) as related to Asian dust (AD), smog-AD, smog, and nonevent days and evaluated the differential risks according to specific events for mortality. The daily records of all-cause/cardiovascular mortality and PM(2.5) from March to May 2003-2006 in Seoul, Korea, were used as independent and dependent variables. Differences in the event effects were assessed using a time-series analysis. Both all-cause and cardi
