Rapid Communication: Personality and attention: Levels of neuroticism and extraversion can predict attentional performance during a change detection task
Sowon Hahn, Daniel R. Buttaccio, Jungwon Hahn, Taehun Lee
SJR Q2FWCI 2.9Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology

The present study demonstrates that levels of extraversion and neuroticism can predict attentional performance during a change detection task. After completing a change detection task built on the flicker paradigm, participants were assessed for personality traits using the Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-R). Multiple regression analyses revealed that higher levels of extraversion predict increased change detection accuracies, while higher levels of neuroticism predict decreased c

A posteriori error estimate for adaptive finite element mesh generation
Sowon Hahn, C. Calmels, Gérard Meunier, J.-L. Coulomb
SJR Q2FWCI 5.4IEEE Transactions on Magnetics

A method for deriving error estimates for adaptive mesh refinement is presented. It is based on the interelement boundary conditions, namely, the continuity of the normal components of the flux density and the tangential components of the magnetic field intensity. The elements that violate the conditions significantly are considered to have large local errors and are refined. Applications to magnetostatic problems involving Laplace's equation with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in two

On the relationship between mind perception and social support of chatbots
Inju Lee, Sowon Hahn
SJR Q2FWCI 9.0Frontiers in PsychologyOA

The social support provided by chatbots is typically designed to mimic the way humans support others. However, individuals have more conflicting attitudes toward chatbots providing emotional support (e.g., empathy and encouragement) compared to informational support (e.g., useful information and advice). This difference may be related to whether individuals associate a certain type of support with the realm of the human mind and whether they attribute human-like minds to chatbots. In the present

Age Influences on Multi-Dimensional Set Switching
Sowon Hahn, George J. Andersen, Arthur F. Kramer
SJR Q2FWCI 0.3Aging Neuropsychology and Cognition

Using a task switching paradigm, we investigated age effects on switch costs as a function of the number of sets to be switched. In Experiment 1, younger and older subjects determined a color or shape of an object presented on the computer screen, responding either by moving the joystick or by pressing a button on the joystick. The switch costs were assessed with differences between switch trials (task-set switch, response-set switch, and double switch) and non-switch trials. Contrary to the pre

The effect of behavioral response on affective evaluation
Daniel R. Buttaccio, Sowon Hahn
SJR Q1FWCI 0.8Acta PsychologicaOA

In the present research we investigated how action influences affective evaluation. In three experiments, participants conducted a sequence of go/no-go tasks, then evaluated the pleasantness of a novel shape. The results of Experiments 1 and 2 show that participants evaluated the shapes that appeared in the go trials more positively than the shapes that appeared in the no-go trials. In Experiment 3, the go/no-go task was conducted without the to-be-evaluated shapes present in the display. The re

Static Scene Analysis for the Perception of Heading
Sowon Hahn, George J. Andersen, Asad Saidpour
SJR Q1FWCI 0.7Psychological Science

In the current study, we explored observers' use of two distinct analyses for determining their direction of motion, or heading: a scene-based analysis and a motion-based analysis. In two experiments, subjects viewed sequentially presented, paired digitized images of real-world scenes and judged the direction of heading; the pairs were presented with various interstimulus intervals (ISIs). In Experiment 1, subjects could determine heading when the two frames were separated with a 1,000-ms ISI, l

Aging and guided visual search: the role of visual working memory
Sowon Hahn, Daniel R. Buttaccio
SJR Q2FWCI 0.8Aging Neuropsychology and Cognition

In the present study, we examined age-related differences in utilizing learned associations to guide visual search. Participants viewed an object cue that was associated with 1 or 2 target colors, followed by a search array. Older adults showed slower RTs, larger visual search slopes, and reduced cue-target association knowledge than did younger adults. We also found increased search RTs and higher error rates when the cue was associated with 2 colors instead of 1. However, visual search slopes

Trapped Field Analysis in an HTS Bulk With a Crack Using 3D Finite Element Method
Sowon Hahn, Sung‐Hoon Kim, Sowon Hahn
SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

The trapped field variation of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) bulk before and after a crack happens, which was impossible to simulate using 2D analysis method, was calculated in this paper. 3D finite element method (FEM) and iteration method were used to find screening current distribution inside an HTS bulk. In 3D analysis of an HTS bulk with a crack, calculated current distribution inside an HTS bulk should obey the equation of current continuity. For this purpose, /spl nabla//spl ph

Age and gender differences in loneliness during the COVID-19: Analyses on large cross-sectional surveys and emotion diaries
Yoonwon Jung, Yoon Kyung Lee, Sowon Hahn
FWCI 0.6OA

Loneliness level was shown to vary by age and gender. Considering the recent COVID-19 outbreak had more impact on the susceptible groups’ mental health, this study scrutinized the joint influence of age and gender on loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. We utilized large, government-funded public data that contains self-reported measures and emotion diaries collected from October 2020 to March 2021 (N=4,017, age 20-79, 76% female). Hierarchical regression, t-test, and analysis
