15Reports of racially discriminatory behaviors toward Asians in the United States have surged during the COVID-19 pandemic The current study examined self-reported racial discrimination toward Asians and Asian Americans living in the United States in relation to four mental and physical health outcomes: anxiety, depressive, and physical symptoms and sleep difficulties The moderating role of social support was also examined In addition, participants were asked to describe a specific instance of dis
Cell cycle process is regulated by a number of protein kinases and among them, serine/threonine kinases carry phosphate group from ATP to substrates. The most important three kinase families are Cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk), Polo-like kinase (Plk), and Aurora kinase. Polo-like kinase family consists of 5 members (Plk1-Plk5) and they are involved in multiple functions in eukaryotic cell division. It regulates a variety of aspects such as, centrosome maturation, checkpoint recovery, spindle assem
Sphk2 is transcriptionally up-regulated by acute ER stress through activation of ATF4 and improves perturbed hepatic glucose and FA metabolism.
We investigated the vitamin D status of Korean women during pregnancy and assessed the effects of vitamin D deficiency on two pregnancy outcomes; preterm births and the births of small for gestational age. We measured the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in 220 pregnant Korean women who were recruited prospectively and compared these levels with those of 500 healthy non-pregnant women. We analyzed vitamin D status according to patient demographics, season, and obstetrical characteristics; moreov
For clinical application of pharmacogenetic tests, quantitative prediction of enzyme activity based on accurate determination of genotype is essential. There has been limited information available on the genetic polymorphism of CYP2D6 in the Korean population. In this study, CYP2D6 genotypes were assessed in 400 Korean subjects. Twenty-eight different CYP2D6 alleles and 35 genotypes were detected. On the basis of the genotype determined, the frequency of poor metabolizers and ultrarapid metaboli
The role of serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) and de novo ceramide biosynthesis in cardiac ceramide and sphingomyelin metabolism is unclear. To determine whether the de novo synthetic pathways, rather than ceramide uptake from circulating lipoproteins, is important for heart ceramide levels, we created cardiomyocyte-specific deficiency of Sptlc2, a subunit of SPT. Heart-specific Sptlc2-deficient (hSptlc2 KO) mice had a >35% reduction in ceramide, which was limited to C18:0 and very long chain ce
The current results indicated that a genome-wide pharmacogenomic approach is useful for identifying novel polymorphism predictors of severe OXCPN that may be used in personalized chemotherapy.
We could not convincingly replicate most of the previous studies, a result that is possibly due to modest association between the suggested genes. Rather, we found a new candidate gene, ABCB1, for treatment response, which may provide a hypothesis on the relationship between the blood-brain distribution of CLZ and its clinical efficacy.
This prospective study sought to investigate serum levels of trace elements (cobalt, copper, zinc, and selenium) and to assess their effects on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. Serum levels of trace elements in 245 Korean pregnant women (median gestational age at delivery was 39 + 4 weeks and interquartile range was 38 + 4-40 + 1 weeks) were compared with those of 527 general adults and those of previous studies in other ethnic groups. Pregnancy and neonatal outcomes including gestational diabet
We conclude that COMP-Ang1 delayed the fibrotic changes in the kidney of diabetic db/db mice through its anti-inflammatory or metabolic effects.
The effect of frequency of alternating current during ohmic heating on electrode corrosion, heating rate, inactivation of food-borne pathogens, and quality of salsa was investigated. The impact of waveform on heating rate was also investigated. Salsa was treated with various frequencies (60 Hz to 20 kHz) and waveforms (sine, square, and sawtooth) at a constant electric field strength of 12.5 V/cm. Electrode corrosion did not occur when the frequency exceeded 1 kHz. The heating rate of the sample
Metabolism of amino acids, including ABA and glutamic acid, has the potential to contribute to understandings of pathogenesis and predictions of therapeutic response in MDD.
Vitamin A and carotenoids are fat-soluble micronutrients that play important role as powerful antioxidants modulating oxidative stress and cancer development. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. As the risk of breast cancer is dependent on various lifestyle factors such as dietary modifications, there is increasing interest surrounding the anti-cancerous properties of vitamin A and carotenoids. Despite the suggested protective roles of vitamin A and carotenoids in breast cancer
