15Blind source separation (BSS) and independent component analysis (ICA) are generally based on a wide class of unsupervised learning algorithms and they found potential applications in many areas from engineering to neuroscience. A recent trend in BSS is to consider problems in the framework of matrix factorization or more general signals decomposition with probabilistic generative and tree structured graphical models and exploit a priori knowledge about true nature and structure of latent (hidde
This study investigates the relative effects of four types of family‐friendly policies—child care subsidies, paid leave for family care, telework, and alternative work schedules—on turnover rates and effectiveness in federal agencies. Contemporary social exchange theory predicts that an agency’s average level of satisfaction with a specific family‐friendly policy is negatively associated with turnover in the agency but positively associated with overall performance. This analysis differs from co
The cost of non-urinary tract infections caused by ESBL-EK was 1.7 times the cost of non-urinary tract infections caused by non-ESBL producers. Prompt recognition and appropriate antimicrobial selection may minimize this ESBL-related impact on hospital costs.
We study resonance patterns of a spiral-shaped dielectric microcavity with chaotic ray dynamics. Many resonance patterns of this microcavity, with refractive indices n=2 and 3, exhibit strong localization of simple geometric shape, and we call them quasiscarred resonances in the sense that there is, unlike conventional scarring, no underlying periodic orbits. It is shown that the formation of a quasiscarred pattern can be understood in terms of ray dynamical probability distributions and wave pr
It is numerically shown that the Petermann excess noise factor diverges to infinity at an exceptional point (EP) found near an avoided resonance crossing in a stadium-shaped dielectric microcavity. Square-root singularity of eigenvalue at the EP is explicitly demonstrated in two-dimensional parameter space spanned by refractive index and deformation parameter. The results imply that mode-mode interaction makes the Petermann factor large.
Abstract In this paper we offer an approach for conceptualizing and measuring government effectiveness or performance in which the focus is on the whole government's effectiveness. We examine data that portray how countries compare in terms of perceived government effectiveness using the World Bank Governance Indicators dataset, which cover 212 countries from 1996 until 2006. We also offer and interpret a new measure of perceived government effectiveness that accounts for the economic developmen
The liver is the largest organ in the body; it has a complex architecture, wide range of functions and unique regenerative capacity. The growing incidence of liver diseases worldwide requires increased numbers of liver transplant and leads to an ongoing shortage of donor livers. To meet the huge demand, various alternative approaches are being investigated including, hepatic cell transplantation, artificial devices and bioprinting of the organ itself. Adult hepatocytes are the preferred cell sou
In children with moderate AD, oral administration of RHT3201 showed the therapeutic effect on AD, the effects in part correlated with decrement of ECP and IL-31, and the effect was more remarkable in subgroup analysis.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important cellular second messengers involved in various aspects of cell signaling. ROS are elevated in multiple types of cancer cells, and this elevation is known to be involved in pathological processes of cancer. Although high levels of ROS exert cytotoxic effects on cancer cells, low levels of ROS stimulate cell proliferation and survival by inducing several pro‑survival signaling pathways. In addition, ROS have been shown to induce epithelial‑mesenchymal tr
Although the resistance of cSSSI pathogens is problematic, new antibiotics with broad-spectrum activity against resistant gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria are promising for the management of severe cSSSIs.
This study suggests the maintenance of a urinary catheter for a period longer than 2 days and intraoperative fluid restriction to prevent acute urinary retention after rectal cancer surgery.
We investigate scarred resonances of a stadium-shaped chaotic microcavity. It is shown that two components with different chirality of the scarring pattern are slightly rotated in opposite ways from the underlying unstable periodic orbit, when the incident angles of the scarring pattern are close to the critical angle for total internal reflection. In addition, the correspondence of emission pattern with the scarring pattern disappears when the incident angles are much larger than the critical a
We study the geometrical phase when multiple exceptional points (EPs) are involved. In an optical microcavity of a stadium shape, we find two EPs, connected through three interacting modes, in a two-dimensional parameter space. It is shown that the geometrical phase imprinted on wave functions becomes zero when the two EPs are encircled three times in the parameter plane. In addition, we examine geometrical phases when three EPs are involved in a $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$ matrix mod
