The Role of Vitamin E in Immunity
Ga Young Lee, Sung Nim Han
SJR Q1FWCI 29.8NutrientsOA

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that can protect the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the membrane from oxidation, regulate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), and modulate signal transduction. Immunomodulatory effects of vitamin E have been observed in animal and human models under normal and disease conditions. With advances in understating of the development, function, and regulation of dendritic cells (DCs), macrophages, natural k

Effect of hydrogenated and saturated, relative to polyunsaturated, fat on immune and inflammatory responses of adults with moderate hypercholesterolemia

SJR Q1FWCI 8.2Journal of Lipid ResearchOA

Consumption of diets high in hydrogenated fat/trans fatty acids has been shown to have an adverse affect on lipoprotein profiles with respect to cardiovascular disease risk. Dietary fat and cholesterol play an important role in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses shown to be involved in atherogenesis. We investigated the effects of diets containing hydrogenated fat on cellular immune response and production of inflammatory cytokines in human subjects with moderately elevated chol

Vitamin E supplementation increases T helper 1 cytokine production in old mice infected with influenza virus

SJR Q1FWCI 1.5ImmunologyOA

Compared with young mice, old mice infected with influenza virus have significantly higher pulmonary viral titres, although these can be reduced significantly with dietary vitamin E supplementation. T helper 1 (Th1) cytokines, especially interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), play an important role in defending against influenza infection. However, there is an age-associated loss of Th1 cytokine production. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production, which increases with age, can modulate the T helper cell funct

Antioxidants, Cytokines, and Influenza Infection in Aged Mice and Elderly Humans
Sung Nim Han, Simin Nikbin Meydani
SJR Q1FWCI 4.3The Journal of Infectious Diseases

The age-associated dysregulation of the immune response contributes to higher incidences of infectious diseases in the aged. Of note, there is dysregulation of cytokines, including a change in T helper (Th) 1/Th2 cytokine balance and an increase in production of proinflammatory cytokines. Synthesis of many cytokines is influenced by changes in the cellular oxidant/antioxidant balance. Because vitamin E supplementation reduces oxidative stress and improves the immune response in the aged, a serie

Age and Vitamin E-Induced Changes in Gene Expression Profiles of T Cells

SJR Q1FWCI 2.6The Journal of ImmunologyOA

T cells are vulnerable to age-associated changes. Vitamin E has been shown to improve T cell functions in the old. We studied gene expression profiles of T cells to better understand the underlying mechanisms of age and vitamin E-induced changes in T cell function. Young and old C57BL mice were fed diets containing 30 (control) or 500 (supplemented) ppm of vitamin E for 4 wks. Gene expression profiles of T cells were assessed using microarray analysis with/without anti-CD3/anti-CD28 stimulation.

Effect of Long-term Dietary Antioxidant Supplementation on Influenza Virus Infection

SJR Q1FWCI 4.2The Journals of Gerontology Series AOA

This study compared the effect of vitamin E on the course of influenza infection with that of other antioxidants. (In a previous study we showed that short-term vitamin E supplementation significantly decreased pulmonary viral titer in influenza-infected old mice). Eighteen-month-old C57BL/6NCrlBR mice were fed one of the following semisynthetic diets for 6 months: control, vitamin E supplemented, glutathione supplemented, vitamin E and glutathione supplemented, melatonin supplemented, or strawb

High fat diet‐Induced obesity alters vitamin <scp>D</scp> metabolizing enzyme expression in mice
Jeong Min Park, Chan Yoon Park, Sung Nim Han
SJR Q1FWCI 2.9BioFactors

Low serum 25(OH)D concentrations have been reported in obese humans. Inadequate sun exposure and impaired hepatic 25-hydroxylation have been suggested as possible reasons for obesity-associated vitamin D deficiency; however, the underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. We investigated the effects of high fat diet-induced obesity on vitamin D status and vitamin D metabolizing enzyme expression. Male C57BL mice (4 weeks old) were fed control diet containing 10% energy from fat (control group)

Aging is associated with dysregulation of immune cells, particularly T cells. Previous studies indicated that vitamin E improves T cell function, in part by a direct effect on T cells. We studied gene expression profile of T cells to better understand the underlying mechanisms of aging- and vitamin E-induced changes in T cell function. Young and old C57BL mice were fed diets containing 30 (control) or 500 (E) ppm of vitamin E for 4 weeks. T cells were purified from splenocytes by negative select

Vitamin E and infectious diseases in the aged
Sung Nim Han, Simin Nikbin Meydani
SJR Q1FWCI 2.8Proceedings of The Nutrition SocietyOA

The incidence of infectious diseases, particularly respiratory diseases, increases with age. Age-associated decline in immune function contributes to the increased susceptibility of the aged to infections. Vitamin E supplementation has been shown to improve some aspects of immune function in aged animals and human subjects. The protective effect of vitamin E against viral or bacterial infections in experimentally-challenged young animals has been reported. We investigated the effects of suppleme

Vitamin E: Regulatory role on gene and protein expression and metabolomics profiles

SJR Q1FWCI 1.4IUBMB LifeOA

Results from microarray analyzes have shown that both vitamin E deficiency and supplementation have a significant impact on the gene expression of various tissues and cells. Genes that were modulated by vitamin E supplementation were different depending on the tissue, which suggested that changes in gene expression are reflective of tissue function and the tissue-specific regulation of vitamin E. In addition, the magnitude of gene expression and types of genes whose expression was altered were d

Multifaceted Roles of Vitamin D for Diabetes: From Immunomodulatory Functions to Metabolic Regulations
Chan Yoon Park, Sunhye Shin, Sung Nim Han
SJR Q1FWCI 12.7NutrientsOA

Numerous studies have established associations between vitamin D and diabetes. The vitamin D receptor is widely distributed throughout the human body, including in pancreatic beta cells (β-cells), hepatocytes, and immune cells. Therefore, vitamin D's effect on the risk, progression, or complications of diabetes may be mediated through various mechanisms. These include the regulation of insulin secretion or sensitivity and modulation of β-cell function and its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammato
