Boundary-Breaking Disposition against Post-Truth: Five Big Questions for Religious Education
Song‐Chong Lee
SJR Q1FWCI 6.6ReligionsOA

This paper articulates how religious education can broaden our perspective on post-truth from simply an issue of critical reading to a philosophical challenge involving larger issues such as our sense of self, perception of others, and grounding of justice. Pointing out that the root cause of post-truth is our parochial, defensive sense of self and community, which premises a boundary-drawing/building mindset, the author suggests the feeling of transcendence as an intellectual, psychological, an

SJR Q2FWCI 4.5Teaching Theology & ReligionOA

Abstract S. Brent Plate's introductory essay orients the reader to the academic move toward material text studies, a wide range of research questions and pedagogical practices that includes attention to the history of the book, book technologies, the social habits of readership especially in relation to print culture, and issues raised in media studies about differences in verbal communication. This introduction is followed by a series of one‐page Teaching Tactics that prompt students to ask abo

The Violence of New Religious Movements and the Entrepreneurial Model: With a Focus on the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Korea
Song‐Chong Lee
SJR Q2FWCI 0.6The Journal of Religion

The main objective of this article is to introduce a new Korean religious movement, Shincheonji Church of Jesus (SCJ) and to discuss some of its missionary strategies as a type of violence, which I believe the traditional models of new religious movement (NRM) and violence cannot duly explain. The SCJ has recently been singled out as the epicenter of COVID-19 in Korea, as most of the early confirmed cases were linked to its members and as its clandestine proselytizing was blamed as the main caus

An Aristotelian Interpretation of Bojo Jinul and an Enhanced Moral Grounding
Song‐Chong Lee
SJR Q1FWCI 1.8ReligionsOA

This paper explores the eclecticism of Bojo Jinul (1158–1210 CE), who is arguably the most influential historic figure in establishing and developing the Buddhist monastic institution of Korea. As a great harmonizer of the conflicting Buddhist trends in the late Goryeo period, Jinul not only shaped the foundation of the traditional monastic discipline balanced between theory and practice but also made Korean Buddhist thoughts known to a larger part of East Asia. I revisit the eclecticism of Bojo

A philosophical problem of the Korean church’s missiological use of sports
Song‐Chong Lee

The objective of this chapter is to question the Korean church’s missionary use of sports and to discuss some violations particularly of the intrinsic values of sport. This paper presents and explains some of the problems associated with Korean missionaries’ use of sports. This paper does not dispute the spiritual and moral foundation of evangelism, and the author fully recognizes and respects the work of missionaries. The author questions whether the missionary and missiological use of sports i

Religious Conflict and Coexistence
Song‐Chong Lee, Yo-Han Yoo
OA

The articles in this volume present a variety of theoretical and historical cases to enlarge our understanding of religious conflict and coexistence. Seven out of the ten articles discuss cases of major religions in Korea, including Shamanism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Christianity. They explore the particularity of Korean religions in seeking theological and philosophical inclusiveness, playing a positive role in society and building stable interreligious relations. The other three ar

Re-envisioning Civil Religion in a Collaborative, Constructive Model
Song‐Chong Lee
Religion and Culture

In this paper, I argue that the mainstream discussion of religion and politics and the dominant discourse of civil religion are both based on the narrow definition of politics, which premises power-dynamic and power-relation. However, growing worldwide interfaith engagement can contribute to reshaping our conversation particularly of civil religion. In the new political environment religion does not necessarily play the categorical role of the traditional power-dynamic. A variety of interfaith e

Ham Sok Hon, a Pioneer of Korean Cosmopolitanism
Song‐Chong Lee
SJR Q1ReligionsOA

This paper discusses an aspect of Ham Sok Hon’s philosophy, which the author argues would reflect, and contribute to enriching, the theory of cosmopolitanism. Ham was arguably one of the 20th century’s most influential, yet controversial, thinkers and political activists—particularly in the progressive movement of modern Korea. The author revisits his philosophy of ssial/saengmyŏng to find a more persuasive metaphysical ground to draw an enlarged and deepened sense of community than that of domi

Ham Sok Hon: Bridging Spirituality and Politics
Song‐Chong Lee
SJR Q1ReligionsOA

This paper aims to offer an interpretation of Ham Sok Hon’s views on the dynamic relationship between religion and politics. While considerable discussion has already taken place in the Korean academic community across various fields, including philosophy, theology, and political science, many of which propose ssial philosophy as the metaphysical foundation of his political thoughts, there still remains a need for a more systematic understanding of their relationship, which I argue is closely li
