Professor Sung-Hee Han's research lab specializes in pediatric anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, with a focus on improving patient experience and outcomes through innovative, patient-centered interventions. Key research directions include reducing preoperative anxiety in children using immersive technologies such as virtual reality and gamification, evaluating airway management devices for optimal ventilation and safety, and exploring the role of genetic screening in obstetric care and genetic counseling. The lab integrates clinical trials with technological innovation to enhance both pediatric and maternal health outcomes.

The prophylactic use of 0.2 mg/kg of dexamethasone significantly decreases the incidence and severity of sore throat and hoarseness 1 h and 24 h after tracheal extubation of a DLT.
The use of gamification in healthcare has been gaining popularity. This prospective, randomized, clinical trial was designed to evaluate whether gamification of the preoperative process-via virtual reality (VR) gaming that provides a vivid, immersive and realistic experience-could reduce preoperative anxiety in children. Seventy children scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia were randomly divided into either the control or gamification group. Children in the control group recei
Preoperative immersive virtual reality tour of the operating theater did not reduce the incidence and severity of emergence delirium, although it was effective in alleviating preoperative anxiety in children.

The PLMA showed significantly lower oropharyngeal leak pressures than did the LTS or CobraPLA in the neck extension and rotation positions. Caution is warranted when changing the position of the head and neck when using the Cobra-PLA or LTS as gastric insufflation or ventilatory difficulty may occur.
The present study could be used for the establishment of a database for genetic counseling. The discovery of an abnormality provides the option of termination or continuation in the pregnancy, a more suitable obstetric management in Korea.
These results suggest that tracheal shortening may contribute to a decrease in the distance between the ETT tip and the carina, increasing the risk of accidental endobronchial intubation during laparoscopic gynecologic surgery.
Positioning the ETT by auscultation places the ETT more deeply than the midtrachea, which can increase the risk of endobronchial intubation during neck flexion.
During fibreoptic intubation, it is often difficult to advance a tracheal tube over the fibreoptic bronchoscope. We performed a prospective randomised study to investigate the effect of the jaw-thrust manoeuvre on the ability to advance a tracheal tube during oral fibreoptic intubation. After placing the bronchoscope in the trachea, an assistant randomly applied a jaw-thrust manoeuvre (jaw-thrust group) or sham manoeuvre (control group) in 82 patients during tube advancement. The jaw-thrust grou
ANH in combination with esmolol-induced CH causes a significant decrease in cerebral oxygen saturation compared with ANH alone.
This randomized clinical trial demonstrated that midazolam premedication enhanced mask ventilation during induction of general anesthesia.
In paediatric patients, the haemodilution associated with crystalloid priming causes a greater reduction in rSO(2) than with blood-containing prime at the starting period of CPB and the rewarming period.

Virtual reality (VR), which offers an immersive experience, has been implemented into the education of pediatric patients to reduce peri-procedural anxiety. This randomized clinical trial evaluated the effect of VR, compared with standard video, on reducing anxiety and distress in pediatric patients undergoing chest radiography. A total of 120 children aged 4 to 8 years with scheduled chest radiography appointments were randomized into either the tablet or the VR group. Children in the tablet gr
