15Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the Caucasian population. In the United States, it is estimated that at least one in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, leading to significant morbidity and a healthcare burden. Skin cancer mainly arises from cells in the epidermal layer of the skin, where oxygen is scarce. There are three main types of skin cancer: malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Accumulating evidence has revealed a c
The lateral arm flap is an alternative to the conventional radial forearm flap and has been widely used due to advancements in flap characteristics. Especially, the fasciocutaneous flap has been widely used in head and neck reconstruction due to its versatile characteristics and surgical feasibility. This flap has successfully undergone several useful modifications based on various anatomical studies. Here, the authors aimed to verify the versatility and reliability of free lateral arm flap reco
Chronic wounds are often characterized by prolonged inflammation, impaired angiogenesis, and dysregulated hypoxic response, partly caused by the insufficient activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α). This study investigated the potential of engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) to deliver a stable, constitutively active form of HIF-1α (scHIF-1α) to promote wound healing. A collagen-binding domain (CBD) was integrated into EVs to enhance their retention at wound sites, and collag

Children with cleft palate are susceptible to otitis media with effusion. This study aimed to investigate the effect of lateral relaxing incision (RI) on middle ear function in cleft palate patients who underwent palatoplasty using double-opposing Z-plasty (DOZ). This is a retrospective study of patients who underwent bilateral ventilation tube insertion concurrently with DOZ, wherein RI was selectively performed on the right side of the palate (Rt-RI group) or not (No-RI group). The frequency o
Chitosan hydrogel demonstrates the potential to serve as an effective alternative to PI hydrogel, providing enhanced wound healing capabilities while maintaining comparable antimicrobial properties.
Background: The use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) has been popularized in implant-based breast reconstruction (IBR). However, it is still controversial if ADM-associated complication rates differ with varying types of ADM products. The aim of this study was to compare postoperative complications between CGCRYODERM and DermACELL.Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on 32 patients (64 breasts) who underwent bilateral prosthetic breast reconstruction between June 2015 and December
These findings suggest that delayed surgical timing may support better cranial growth, as indicated by increased HC at long-term follow-up. However, delayed timing is also associated with worsening abnormally elevated CH. Despite the immediate APD expansion and long-term HC increase with DO, potential relapse warrants caution. While intentional overcorrection of APD is recommended, careful consideration of surgical timing and planning is essential.
In regenerative medicine, effective management of tissue ischemia in surgical skin flaps is crucial, yet challenging, particularly because inadequate blood flow often leads to necrosis at the distal flap tips. This study aimed to examine the therapeutic potential of catalase-coated oxygen-generating microparticles embedded in gelatin methacryloyl (cOMP-GelMA) hydrogel to establish an optimized environment conducive to tissue regeneration. Using a large 3 × 9 cm2 rat random-pattern ski
The purpose of this study was to compare speech outcomes in patients with submucous cleft palate (SMCP) between speech therapy alone and double-opposing Z-plasty (DOZ) combined with speech therapy. The subjects were 67 patients with SMCP (overt type, 45 males, 22 females), who were divided into the observation group (n=18), the speech therapy group (n=24; duration, 17.8 mo), and the DOZ and speech therapy (DOZ-speech therapy) group (n=25; median age at DOZ, 5.3 years, duration, 18.6 mo). Purpose: Epidermoid cysts are common benign skin neoplasms derived from the pilosebaceous apparatus that usually develop in hair-bearing regions such as the head and neck. Epidermal cysts rarely occur in the extremities, especially in the palmoplantar region. Therefore, they can be easily misdiagnosed as warts or calluses. Here, we present our experience treating epidermal cysts in the extremities, including a very rare case of malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: This
