현재의 기후·생태위기는 ‘거대한 재난’으로서 인류 및 다른 생명체를 생존의 한계로 몰아가고 있다. 그러한 한계 상황으로까지 이끈 ‘근대 문명’ 자체를 극복하기 위한 차원에서 20세기 한국의 역사를 비판적으로 돌아보고자 한다. 먼저 위기 국면을 마주하며 새로운 역사철학적 전망을 제시하고 있는 디페시 차크라바르티(Dipesh Chakrabarty)의 논의를 소개한다. 다음으로 최근 인류세(Anthropocene), 자본세(Capitalocene)의 관점을 20세기 한국 근현대사에도 접목해보면서 대가속의 주요 지표들을 보여준다. 그리고 한국 근현대사의 주요 개설서에서 나오는 인식의 한계를 짚으며 역사 인식을 제고할 필요성을 제기하고자 한다. 끝으로 역사 인식의 제고를 바탕으로 ‘부정적 보편사(negative universal history)’의 한 방법으로 생태환경사(ecological and environmental history) 연구를 제언하고자 한다.
