This study simultaneously explores the effects of “consolidation” and “privatization” of ports that are located in proximity to one another. The main benefit of consolidation is assumed to be economies of scale due to the aggregation of container cargo in one port, while that of privatization is cost reduction for port management and operations. We employ a multi-agent simulation model to express interactions among stakeholders, such as a port management body, shipping company, and shipper. The
In the last six years, there has been a rise in research interest with regard to the applications of blockchain technology in supply chains and how these applications bring benefits to supply chain management. In a broader sense, an essential research focus that has been discussed in the literature is the way in which this emerging blockchain technology in supply chains brings sustainable benefits to a community. The rationale for incorporating cloud technology into a blockchain and integrating
Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the preferences of potential Japanese cruise ship tourists and identify the factors influencing their participation in cruise ship tourism. In the analysis, preference for cruise ports in East Asia is also examined. Design/methodology/approach The behavioral model of potential cruiser is developed through a mixed ordered logit approach. The data are collected by means of the stated preference method with the application of a Web-based questionnaire
This paper formulates an inland cargo flow model that considers the additional costs incurred because of variability in shipment times at borders and seaports. Using the proposed model, five scenario analyses for cross-border haulage between Lao PDR and seaports in Thailand and Vietnam are carried out in order to assess the impact of improving border and seaport reliability. These scenario analyses show that improving shipment time variability at seaports has more impact on cost reduction compar
Global maritime container trade has increased during the past two decades. In many developing countries, secondary ports have been developed to complement primary ports. However, primary ports are still being used even after the development of a secondary port, notwithstanding heavy congestion at the former. Construction of new port infrastructure demands several important decisions such as port capacity and number of gantry cranes and berths, which significantly affect shippers’ port choice. Th
This paper describes a set of new procedures used to generate choice sets for grocery shopping destination choices observed in a large scale GPS data set.The procedures are a rulebased identification of the shopping trips, defining places from the observed locations using a hierarchical-clustering algorithm and finally a rule-based identification of the place of home and work/education and implicitly with this the imputation of the trip purposes. The GPS traces were collected by volunteers: 2,435
Truck platooning can potentially reduce carbon emissions caused by the road freight sector because fuel consumption would be reduced when trucks travel in a platoon. While research about the coordination and benefits of truck platooning is underway, the high costs of such technology suggest it will be several years before significant market penetration is achieved. In this study, we develop an improved mixed-integer linear programming model to optimize the formation and route of truck platooning
Purpose In the maritime industry, it is vital to have a reliable forecast of container shipping demand. Although indicators of economic conditions have been used in modeling container shipping demand on major routes such as those from East Asia to the USA, the duration of such indicators’ effects on container movement demand have not been systematically examined. To bridge this gap in research, this study aims to identify the important US economic indicators that significantly affect the volume
