Abstract. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ∼ 21 000 years ago) has been a major focus for evaluating how well state-of-the-art climate models simulate climate changes as large as those expected in the future using paleoclimate reconstructions. A new generation of climate models has been used to generate LGM simulations as part of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP) contribution to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP). Here, we provide a preliminary analysis and ev
Abstract Sapropels are sediments rich in black, pelagic organic matter which occur mainly in the Eastern Mediterranean, documenting anoxic environments and high biological productivity. The quasiperiodicity of deposition of sapropels ‐over millions of years‐ relates to the Earth's precession cycle, which directly enhances the African monsoon, ultimately increasing freshwater input from the Nile. The last sapropel event, S1, occurred about 10,000 years ago (Early Holocene), when the Mediterranean
Between the Last Glacial Maximum and the mid-Holocene, the Mediterranean Sea experienced major hydrological changes. The deposition of the last sapropel, S1, during the Early Holocene is a consequence of these changes. In order to cause anoxia in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) bottom water, a long preconditioning period of a few thousand years would need to occur throughout the deglaciation prior to S1. It is generally believed that this freshwater was of North Atlantic origin, later supple
Abstract. Recently, major progress has been made in the simulation of the ocean dynamics of the Mediterranean using atmospheric and oceanic models with high spatial resolution. High resolution is essential to accurately capture the synoptic variability required to initiate intermediate- and deep-water formation, the engine of the Mediterranean thermohaline circulation (MTC). In paleoclimate studies, one major problem with the simulation of regional climate changes is that boundary conditions are
Abstract. The quaternary climate is characterised by glacial-interglacial cycles, with the most recent transition from the last glacial maximum to the present interglacial (the last deglaciation) occurring between ~ 21 and 9 ka. While the deglacial warming at southern high latitudes is mostly in phase with atmospheric CO2 concentrations, some proxy records have suggested that the onset of the warming occurred before the CO2 increase. In addition, southern high latitudes exhibit a cooling event i

<p>Southern Ocean sea ice and oceanic fronts are known to play an important role on the climate system, carbon cycles, bottom ocean circulation, and Antarctic ice sheet. However, many models of the previous Past-climate Model Intercomparison Project (PMIP) underestimated sea-ice extent (SIE) for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM)(Roche et al., 2012; Marzocchi and Jensen, 2017), mainly because of surface bias (Flato et al., 2013) that may have an impact on mean ocean temperature (MOT).

&lt;p&gt;During quaternary, periodic organic rich layers in the Mediterranean Sea marine sediments also known as sapropels, are not only driven by African monsoon modulation. Superimposed to the main pacing associated with precession cycles (about 21 ka) many sapropels are also impacted by the 100 ka periods associated with the glacial-interglacial cycles. The last occurrence (S1) at the end of the last glacial period and the Early Holocene is an appropriate illustration of this behavior
Sapropel events are anoxic crisis occurring quasi-periodically (21000 years) since the Mediterranean Sea became semi enclosed around 14 Ma ago, with only one connection to the global ocean through the Gibraltar strait. The high level of organic content found in sapropels suggests the shutdown of the deep ventilation, and an enhanced biological activity leading to the accumulation of organic material in sediments for thousands of years. Numerous studies highlighted the role of African monsoon enh
