Professor Woonggyu Jung's research lab specializes in developing advanced optical imaging and sensing technologies for biomedical applications. The lab focuses on miniaturized, portable, and endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems, as well as novel fiber-optic and MEMS-based probes for high-resolution, real-time tissue diagnostics. Key research directions include point-of-care diagnostics, multiphoton microscopy integration, and noninvasive 3D optical biopsy using endoscopic OCT. The lab also explores sensitive optical sensors based on thermooptic effects in polymer waveguides for biomedical monitoring.

The goal of this study is to develop an advanced point-of-care diagnostic instrument for use in a primary care office using handheld optical coherence tomography (OCT). This system has the potential to enable earlier detection of diseases and accurate image-based diagnostics. Our system was designed to be compact, portable, user-friendly, and fast, making it well suited for the primary care office setting. The unique feature of our system is a versatile handheld OCT imaging scanner which consist
We present a three-dimensional (3D) endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) system based on a dual-axis scanning microelectromechanical system (MEMS) mirror. The diameter of the MEMS mirror was 1.2mm and both axes were capable of scanning greater than 20° with linearity. The endoscopic MEMS probe was integrated with an OCT system and volume images were obtained at a rate of 3frames∕s by means of two-axis lateral scanning combined with an axial scan. In the initial investigations, 3D OCT im
A temperature sensor based on evanescent field coupling between a single-mode side-polished fiber and a polymer planar waveguide was demonstrated. Due to thermooptic effects of a polymer planar waveguide, the resonance wavelength of the device is very sensitive to ambient temperature. Two kinds of polymers were used as planar waveguide materials. Fabricated sensors have a sensitivity of -0.37 nm//spl deg/C and -0.71 nm//spl deg/C, respectively. We also measured the thermooptic coefficient of emp
A factor that limits the use of multiphoton microscopy (MPM) in clinical and preclinical studies is the lack of a compact and flexible probe. We report on a miniaturized MPM probe employing a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scanning mirror and a double-clad photonic crystal fiber (DCPCF). The use of a MEMS mirror and a DCPCF provides many advantages, such as size reduction, rapid and precise scanning, efficient delivery of short pulses, and high collection efficiency of fluorescent signals.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new modality capable of cross sectional imaging of biological tissue. Due to its many technical advantages such as high image resolution, fast acquisition time, and noninvasive capabilities, OCT is potentially useful in various medical applications. Because OCT systems can function with a fiber optic probe, they are applicable to almost any anatomic structures accessible either directly, or by endoscopy. OCT has the potential to provide a fast and noninvas
A biopsy is a well-known medical test used to evaluate tissue abnormality. Biopsy specimens are invasively taken from part of a lesion and visualized by microscope after chemical treatment. However, diagnosis by means of biopsy is not only variable due to depth and location of specimen but may also damage the specimen. In addition, only a limited number of specimens can be obtained, thus, the entire tissue morphology cannot be observed. We introduce a three-dimensional (3-D) endoscopic optical b
We report the numerical analysis of gradient index (GRIN) lens-based optical coherence tomography imaging probes to derive optimal design parameters. Long and short working distance probes with a small focal spot are considered. In each model, the working distance and beam waist are characterized and compared for different values of length and refractive index of the probe components. We also explore the influence of the outer tubing and refractive index of the sample media. Numerical results sh
Octopuses are notable creatures that can dynamically adhere to a variety of substrates owing to the efficient pressure control within their suction cups. An octopus' suckers are sealed at the rim and function by reducing the pressure inside the cavity, thereby creating a pressure difference between the ambient environment and the inner cavity. Inspired by this mechanism, we developed a plasmonic smart adhesive patch (Plasmonic AdPatch) with switchable adhesion in response to both temperature cha
We present a three-dimensional (3-D) optical coherence tomography (OCT) system based on a dual axis microelectromechanical system (MEMS) mirror. The MEMS mirror provides high-speed, high resolution 2-axis scanning while occupying a very small volume with extremely low power consumption. The dimensions of the mirror are 600/spl times/600 /spl mu/m, and both axes are capable of scanning up to 30 degree angles at frequencies greater than 3 kHz with good linearity. A 3-D image set is acquired when t
Background: Endoscopic technique is often applied for the diagnosis of diseases affecting internal organs and image-guidance of surgical procedures. Although the endoscope has become an indispensable tool in the clinic, its utility has been limited to medical offices or operating rooms because of the large size of its ancillary devices. In addition, the basic design and imaging capability of the system have remained relatively unchanged for decades. Objective: The objective of this study was to
We explored the potential of the smartphone-based endoscopic VIA as an evaluation technique and used the cervicogram to evaluate normal/abnormal tissue using machine learning techniques. The results of this study demonstrate its potential as a screening tool in low-resource settings.
In this study, we demonstrate a novel platform for optical stimulation of neural circuits combined with a microfluidic culture method and microelectrode array measurements. Neuron-on-a-chip was designed and fabricated to isolate axons without a soma or dendrite. Thus, it is readily able to manipulate the neuronal alignment and to investigate the neuronal activity at the locations we want to observe. We adapted the optical stimulation technique to the arranged neurons to generate the neuronal sig
The imaging capability of optical coherence microscopy (OCM) has great potential to be used in neuroscience research because it is able to visualize anatomic features of brain tissue without labeling or external contrast agents. However, the field of view of OCM is still narrow, which dilutes the strength of OCM and limits its application. In this study, we present fully automated wide-field OCM for mosaic imaging of sliced mouse brains. A total of 308 segmented OCM images were acquired, stitche
