Professor Young Lyun Oh's research lab specializes in molecular pathology and cancer biomarkers, with a focus on improving the diagnosis and risk stratification of thyroid and breast cancers. The lab investigates molecular markers such as BRAF, PTB, and cell cycle regulators (e.g., p21, p27, cyclin D1) to understand tumorigenesis and refine pathological classification. They also study human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes and their carcinogenic risks, contributing to preventive strategies and vaccine evaluation in Korean populations. Their work bridges clinical pathology with molecular diagnostics to enhance preoperative diagnosis and personalized treatment approaches.
Figures are computed from collected data and may differ slightly.
The AUS subcategory indicates a higher risk of malignancy than the FLUS subcategory. Furthermore, BRAF molecular testing is helpful in stratifying the malignant risk of AUS cases into high-risk and low-risk groups.
Polypyrimidine-tract-binding protein (PTB) is involved in pre-mRNA splicing and internal-ribosomal-entry-site-dependent translation. The biochemical properties of various segments of PTB were analysed in order to understand the molecular basis of the PTB functions. The protein exists in oligomeric as well as monomeric form. The central part of PTB (amino acids 169–293) plays a major role in the oligomerization. PTB contains several RNA-binding motifs. Among them, the C-terminal part of PTB (amin
There were no differences in clinicopathological or molecular profiles between non-invasive and invasive encapsulated FVPTCs, except in vascular and capsular invasion. Therefore, the diagnosis of NIFTP, like that of follicular adenoma, may require surgical resection and exclusion of those tumours with any papillae.
Taken together, these data suggest that CMVPTC can be diagnosed preoperatively, based on careful cytology examination, and shows unique immunohistochemical findings.
p21Waf1 (p21), p27Kip1 (p27) and cyclin D1 have recently been reported as useful prognostic markers for patients with breast carcinoma. However, studies on these cell cycle regulators in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) have been extremely limited. Therefore, we studied the immunohistochemical expression of p21, p27 and cyclin D1 proteins in 49 DCIS cases and compared the findings with the clinicopathologic parameters (age, tumor size, gross type, histologic type, histologic grade, necrosis and m
Micropapillary variant of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is a rare entity, having a distinct micropapillary component mimicking papillary serous carcinoma of the ovary and has been reported exclusively in the urinary bladder. We experienced a case of micropapillary variant of TCC in the ureter. The tumor showed a predominant proportion of micropapillary component and accompanied a TCC in situ lesion and a high-grade TCC. A metastatic lesion in the regional lymph node also showed an entirely m
This study investigated the distribution of HPV types in Korean women and evaluated the carcinogenic risk of individual HPV types and the potential effects of HPV vaccines. A total of 4,081 HPV-positive samples between 2014 and 2017 were included. The most prevalent genotypes were HPV 16, 58, 68, and 56. Among them, HPV 16 was significantly higher in high-grade squamous intraepithelial neoplasia or worse (HSIL+ ) group. In cytologically evaluating the risk for HSIL+ by individual HPV types, HPV
Background: The current American Thyroid Association risk-stratification system for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) incorporates the number and size of positive lymph nodes (LNs) but places less weight on extranodal extension (ENE). This study investigated how to incorporate ENE into the current system to predict recurrence better in PTC N1 patients. Methods: A total of 369 N1 PTC patients without distant metastasis were enrolled. The combination of number of positi
Our aim is to explore differences in Hector Battifora mesothelial-1 (HBME-1), cytokeratin-19 (CK19), Galectin-3 (Gal-3), and CD56 expression in infiltrative follicular variants of papillary carcinoma (IFVPTC) and encapsulated follicular variants of papillary carcinoma (EFVPTC) and to provide clues for distinguishing the two subtypes preoperatively. Tissue microarrays from 100 EFVPTC (45 non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasms with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) and 55 invasive EFVPTCs
Qualified cytologic diagnosis increases the effectiveness of FNA, forgoing the need for repeat biopsy or intraoperative frozen section evaluation. Preoperative BRAF mutation testing can supplement the routine cytology in the selection of thyroid nodules for surgery.
The ectopic cervical thymoma is sometimes misdiagnosed as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, anaplastic carcinoma and malignant lymphoma of thyroid on FNA cytology or frozen diagnosis due to its rarity. Therefore, the differential diagnosis of a neck mass showing a variable composition of lymphocyte and epithelial component in a pale, eosinophilic, fluid background should also include ectopic cervical thymoma, especially in elderly females.
Maspin is a unique member of the serpin family, which inhibits tumor invasion and metastasis of the human breast and prostate cancers. Immunohistochemical evaluation of the maspin expression in pancreatic neoplasms has never been performed. The authors examined the expression of maspin in various pancreatic neoplasms to investigate its usefulness as an adjunct diagnostic marker. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 107 pancreatic neoplasms were immunostained with anti-maspin an
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the incidence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and to assess its diagnostic usefulness in primary cervical screening. PCR testing for HPV type 16, 18, 31 and 33 was performed on 1305 specimens obtained during routine cervical cancer screening. We analysed the concurrent cervical smears and biopsy, and correlated them with the HPV infection status. We also evaluated histologically-proven cases with ASC
