TL;DR

This paper extends the Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework to include dimension-6 operators modifying top/bottom Yukawa couplings and Higgs-gluon interactions, calculating the Higgs transverse momentum spectrum at NNLL+NNLO accuracy. It shows that such New Physics effects can significantly distort the spectrum despite small total rate shifts, while reducing scale uncertainties and enhancing sensitivity to new physics beyond the Standard Model.

ABSTRACT

After the Higgs boson discovery, LHC can be used as a precision machine to explore its properties. Indeed, in case new resonances will not be found, the only access to New Physics would be via measuring small deviations from the SM predictions. A consistent approach is provided by a bottom-up Effective Field Theory, with dimension six operators built of Standard Model fields (SMEFT). We discuss how this approach works in case of the transverse momentum spectrum of the Higgs particle. In our calculation we augmented the Standard Model with three additional operators describing modifications of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and a point-like Higgs coupling to gluons. Based on recently presented resummed transverse-momentum spectra including these operators at NLL+NLO accuracy, which we recently presented in Ref [1], in this note we show the extension of the calculation to NNLL+NNLO. We find that such modifications, while affecting the total rate within the current uncertainties, can lead to significant distortions of the spectrum. Additionally, through significant reduction of the scale uncertainty we improve the sensitivity to the new operators.

Motivation & Objective

  • To develop a precision framework for probing New Physics via Higgs boson transverse momentum spectra at the LHC.
  • To extend previous NLL+NLO calculations to NNLL+NNLO accuracy for improved theoretical control.
  • To assess the impact of dimension-6 SMEFT operators on the Higgs transverse momentum distribution.
  • To quantify how spectral distortions improve sensitivity to new physics beyond total rate measurements.

Proposed method

  • Incorporates three dimension-6 operators: modified top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and a point-like Higgs-gluon coupling.
  • Uses a bottom-up Effective Field Theory approach (SMEFT) with Standard Model fields to describe New Physics effects.
  • Performs resummation of large logarithms up to NNLL and fixed-order calculations up to NNLO for the transverse momentum spectrum.
  • Applies matching procedures to ensure consistency between the effective theory and full SM predictions.
  • Utilizes recent results from Ref [1] as a foundation for extending the calculation to higher logarithmic and perturbative accuracy.
  • Evaluates scale uncertainties and their reduction due to higher-order corrections.

Research questions

  • RQ1How do dimension-6 SMEFT operators modifying Yukawa and Higgs-gluon couplings affect the Higgs transverse momentum spectrum?
  • RQ2To what extent do these operators induce distortions in the spectrum that go beyond total rate shifts?
  • RQ3How does extending the calculation from NLL+NLO to NNLL+NNLO improve theoretical precision and reduce scale uncertainties?
  • RQ4Can spectral distortions provide stronger sensitivity to New Physics than total cross-section measurements alone?

Key findings

  • The inclusion of dimension-6 operators leads to significant distortions in the Higgs transverse momentum spectrum, even when total rates remain within current experimental uncertainties.
  • The NNLL+NNLO calculation substantially reduces scale uncertainties, enhancing theoretical precision.
  • Spectral distortions provide a more sensitive probe for New Physics than total rate measurements alone.
  • The improved accuracy allows for better discrimination between SM predictions and potential New Physics signals.
  • The framework demonstrates that transverse momentum spectra are a powerful tool for testing SMEFT operators beyond leading-order effects.
