研究室紹介

Professor Ara Woo's research lab focuses on critical care medicine, oncology, and transplant immunology, with a strong emphasis on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression, immunotherapy applications, and post-transplant complications. The lab investigates challenging clinical scenarios such as cutaneous metastases from liver cancer, portal vein thrombosis differentiation, and multidrug-resistant infections in lung transplant recipients. It also contributes to clinical guideline development, particularly in sepsis management and airway complication classification after lung transplantation. The research integrates clinical oncology, infectious disease management, and advanced therapeutic strategies including adoptive immunotherapy and targeted immunomodulation.

HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA INVASIVE TO CHEST WALL
Timothy E. Knight, Ara Woo, JODI MATSUURA BLAISDELL
SJR Q1International Journal of Dermatology

An 88-year-old white man developed hepatocellular carcinoma forming a large subcutaneous mass by direct invasion of the posterior chest wall. Forty-seven cases of cutaneous metastases from primary liver cancer have been reported. These cutaneous metastases showed protean morphologic features with the face and scalp being the most common sites of involvement. The metastatic lesions may be the presenting sign of the cancer. Average survival, after development of a skin metastasis, was 5 months. Sk

Hepatic Infarction Caused by Portal Vein Thrombophlebitis Misdiagnosed as Infiltrative Hepatic Malignancy with Neoplastic Thrombus

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a form of venous thrombosis that usually presents in chronic form without any sequalae in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or liver cirrhosis. Accurate differential diagnosis of bland PVT from neoplastic PVT is an important step for planning treatment options, but the acute form can be challenging. Here we present a case of acute hepatic infarction caused by acute bland PVT combined with pylephlebitis, which was misdiagnosed as infiltrative hepatic mal

Inhalation alone versus inhalation plus intravenous colistin for multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacterial infection after lung transplantation
Ha Eun Kim, Jin Gu Lee, Young Ho Yang, Hyo Chae Paik, Su Jin Jeong, Ara Woo, Song Yee Kim, Moo Suk Park
Korean Journal of TransplantationOA

Background: After lung transplantation, patients are exposed to the risk of various infections accounting for significant morbidity and mortality. Multidrug-resistant gram-negative (MDR-GN) bacteria are emerging pathogen that is difficult to treat. Intravenous (IV) colistin retains good activity against these pathogens, despite its known nephrotoxicity, especially with concurrent calcineurin inhibitor use. Several studies revealed that nebulized colistin provides good therapeutic responses with

Background: Despite recent advances and global improvements in sepsis recognition and supportive care, mortality rates remain high, and adherence to sepsis bundle components in Korea is low. To address this, the Korean Sepsis Alliance, affiliated with the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine, developed the first sepsis treatment guidelines for Korea based on a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis.Methods: A de novo method was used to develop the guidelines. Methodologies include

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has extremely poor prognosis. Immunotherapy has emerged as a new treatment for a number of cancers. Adoptive immunotherapy is one of the important cancer immunotherapy, which relies on the various lymphocytes including cytotoxic T lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) and cytokine induced killer cells. Also, there has been advance in techniques of NK cell activation to more effectively kill the cancer cells. Of note, recently the blocking antibodies targeting programmed

Ha Eun Kim, Bong Suk Park, Young Ho Yang, Eun Yong Kim, Ara Woo, Moo Suk Park, Jin Gu Lee
Korean Journal of TransplantationOA

Background: Airway complications remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation.Since there were clear consensus before, 2018 International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) had proposed the universal guidelines for description of airway complications after lung transplantation. This study is aim to analyze the feasibility and reproducibility of the grading system and its clinical implication after lung transplantation. Methods: We performed a retrospect

Is Chest Imaging Alone Adequate for Diagnosing Interstitial Lung Disease in Microscopic Polyangiitis Based on the 2022 Criteria?
도현수, 박용범, 우아라, 이상원
https://www.eymj.org/DOIx.php?id=10.3349/ymj.2024.0512

Purpose: To investigate the concordance rate between chest imaging and lung biopsy results for interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and to compare their clinical utility for MPA classification. Materials and Methods: This study included 24 patients who had both chest imaging and lung biopsy results at diagnosis and who fulfiled the 2022 American College of Rheumatology/European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology criteria for MPA. Concordance was

Purpose: Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) can develop as a manifestation of graft-versus-host disease following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), and may ultimately require lung transplantation (LT). However, reports on LT outcomes for BOS after allo-HSCT are limited. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of LT for BOS following allo-HSCT with those for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Materials and Methods: A total of 487 patients underwent LT between
