研究室紹介

Professor Baek-Kyu Kim's research lab specializes in microvascular and reconstructive surgery, with a strong focus on advanced flap techniques for complex soft tissue and bony reconstructions. The lab investigates innovative free flap applications—particularly the SCIP flap and palmar ulnar artery perforator (PUAP) flap—for reconstructing challenging defects in the hand, foot, and craniofacial regions. Research also extends to rare soft tissue sarcomas like low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma and benign bone tumors such as zygomatic osteomas, emphasizing surgical outcomes, long-term prognosis, and minimally invasive approaches. The lab is particularly known for its clinical innovation in treating rare and complex reconstructive challenges with a focus on functional and aesthetic recovery.

The Classification and Prognosis of Periocular Complications Related to Blindness following Cosmetic Filler Injection
Yujin Myung, Sangjun Yim, Jae Hoon Jeong, Baek‐Kyu Kim, Chan Yeong Heo, Rong‐Min Baek, Changsik John Pak
SJR Q1Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

Common side effects during hyaluronic acid filler injections are typically mild and reversible, but several reports of blindness have received attention. The present study focused on orbital symptoms combined with blindness, aiming to classify affected patients and predict their disease course and prognosis. From September of 2012 to August of 2015, nine patients with vision loss after filler injection were retrospectively reviewed. Ptosis, ophthalmoplegia, and enophthalmos were recorded over a

A comparison of axial circumference between superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator flap and other workhorse flaps in dorsal foot reconstruction
Yujin Myung, Sangjun Yim, Baek‐Kyu Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand SurgeryOA

The authors experienced good results with using the SCIP flap in dorsal foot reconstruction. Reconstruction with the SCIP flap can be a good surgical option, with better postoperative symmetry and minimal donor sequelae, compared to conventional workhorse flaps.

Surgical treatment and long-term outcomes of low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma: a single-center case series of 15 patients

SJR Q1World Journal of Surgical OncologyOA

BACKGROUND: Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is a poorly studied, rare, soft tissue sarcoma. LGMS is characterized by a low malignancy potential, tendency for local recurrence, and low likelihood of distant metastases. However, no studies have reported on the surgical treatment method and its long-term outcomes. METHODS: We included all patients treated for LGMS at our institution between March 2010 and March 2021. Medical charts were retrospectively reviewed to collect demographic infor

SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

BACKGROUND: Fingertips are a common site for hand injuries. The ideal substitute for fingertip pulp is tissue that matches texturally with minimal donor site morbidity. We described anatomical findings from cadaveric studies and the reliability of the palmar ulnar artery perforator (PUAP) free flap techniques for the reconstruction of fingertips injuries. METHODS: The cadaveric study involving 8 hands was conducted to illuminate the anatomy of the hypothenar region. We investigated the emerging

Peripheral Osteoma of the Zygoma

SJR Q2Journal of Craniofacial Surgery

ABSTRACT: Osteoma is a benign, slow growing lesion that consists of compact or cancellous bone. Three types of osteomas could be classified: the central osteoma arising from the endosteum, the peripheral osteoma from the periosteum, and the extraskeletal soft tissue osteoma. in the craniofacial region, peripheral osteomas of the zygoma are quite rare. A literature review identified 7 cases of zygomatic arch and 3 cases of zygomatic body. This is the first report of zygomatic osteoma that was end

Use of an Augmentation Spreader Graft for Management of Nasofacial Angle in Patients With Pseudo-Hump
Baek‐Kyu Kim, Jihyeon Han
SJR Q2Annals of Plastic SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Correction of the hump nose entails more than just simple elimination of the dorsal hump. Recent trend is toward conservative reduction of the hump and appropriate adjustment of the radix height. East Asians often present with pseudo-hump due to underprojected radix or tip, which accentuates the height of the hump. This study introduces our method of pseudo-hump correction and achieving a balanced nasal profile with minimal reduction of the hump and augmentation of the dorsum and tip

A Multimodal Approach to Huge Fibrous Dysplasia With Ocular Symptoms Using a Navigation System and Endoscope

SJR Q2Journal of Craniofacial Surgery

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare sporadic benign disease, which involves from single to several bones with unilateral distribution. Recently, image-based surgical navigation systems have played a significant role in surgical process on neurological and orthopedic operations. However, because an intraoral approach can visualize the field for maxillary surgery, there are few cases using endoscopes for excision of FD. Even though, a huge mass involving posterior side of maxillary sinus

SJR Q2Journal of Craniofacial Surgery

INTRODUCTION: In case of zygomaticomaxillary fibrous dysplasia (FD), surgical treatment is often required due to visual disturbance, exophthalmos, and also necessary for cosmetic reasons. However, it is not easy to determine the timing and method of operation. The objective of our study is to define a new surgical option, for the treatment of FD of zygomaticomaxillary area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five patients affected by FD of their zygomaticomaxillary area who underwent surgery with a core ext

Perforator‐Based Propeller Flap Application in Pressure Ulcer Reconstruction: A Comparative Analysis With Advancement Flaps
Jong‐Ho Kim, Man Wong Han, Joseph Kyu‐hyung Park, Kyoung Min Lee, Baek‐Kyu Kim
SJR Q1MicrosurgeryOA

ABSTRACT Background Pressure ulcers are a prevalent and debilitating condition, often necessitating surgical reconstruction. Various flap techniques, such as Advancement Flaps (AF) and Perforator‐based Propeller Flaps (PBPF), are commonly used for pressure sore reconstruction. While both techniques have proven effective, there is limited research comparing their outcomes in different clinical scenarios. In recent years, PBPF has demonstrated favorable outcomes in various reconstruction fields. H

Anatomical Study of Cutaneous Venous Flow of the Palm
Baek‐Kyu Kim, Heeyeon Kwon, Nobuaki Imanishi, Hak Chang
SJR Q2Annals of Plastic Surgery

BACKGROUNDS: Various flaps elevated from the palm have been widely used for finger and hand reconstruction. Recently, perforator-based free flaps or venous free flaps have received popularity due to several advantages. The cutaneous venous system has been chosen as the circulatory outlet when designing and harvesting the flap from the palmer area due to the small size and thin nature of the flap. However, there have been few descriptions about the anatomy of the palmar cutaneous veins. A more de
